NEWS ANALYSIS The old political wisdom, “all politics is local,” is being turned on its head in the District 5 race for Cecil County Council, with the incumbent, Jackie Gregory, raking in Annapolis and Washington campaign donations while her opponent in the 2020 Republican primary election, Don Harmer, is relying on Cecil County supporters, according to new campaign finance reports filed with the state Board of Elections. Gregory has received a total of $6,303 in contributions, political committee transfers, event ticket proceeds and “in kind” donations of services, with expenditures of $1,001. She reported a remaining bank balance of $5,301 in as yet unspent money. Her donations included money from residents of Delaware and Pennsylvania as well as the Annapolis area and other non-Cecil County locales. The most interesting aspect of Gregory’s campaign finance report, which covered activity in 2019 up until 1/8/2020, is the proportion of her political money that came from state and federal political candidates’ accounts– $2,350 of her total of all funds raised. That figure is almost as much as the $2,638 she received in direct contributions from individuals. State Sen. Jason Gallion, a Harford County Republican who represents a district (35) covering Harford and Cecil […]

COMMENTARY There are no words to express the appropriate level of shock and revulsion at new President Donald Trump’s Saturday (1/21/17) appearance and speech, using the hallowed ground of the CIA’s tribute wall to the anonymous heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation, as a political prop to launch yet another attack on the media, his critics and anyone who might disagree with his rhetoric or policies. It is as though someone stood over a grave at Arlington National Cemetery and launched a political campaign, with lots of rhetoric, campaign signs and banners, and no respect for the gravesite of the hero he is stepping on. In our previous life as a Washington reporter, we visited the hallowed ground that is the entry to the Central Intelligence Agency building, where over 100 stars provide anonymous tribute to members of the intelligence community who died in service to our nation. Anyone, other than Trump, who sees that wall and is informed about its historical significance, cannot help but be moved and silenced in humble gratitude. We also met the family of a fallen CIA officer who took great comfort from their silent, secret star on that wall—it was […]

Rep. Andy Harris (R-1st), chatting with constituents in a teleconference Wednesday, opposed state legislation that would delay a controversial gas drilling proposal for Western Maryland and suggested investment of some US government funds in foreign bonds, including those of China. He also opposed raising the wage base on which Social Security taxes are assessed so as to make wealthier people pay more into the troubled retirement system. He said it would impose a costly burden on small businesses that would have to match employee’s contributions. From throughout the 1st District, Harris fielded questions during the nearly one hour phone chat, at times sounding a bit like a talk radio host as he welcomed callers and responded to a broad range of questions. He was generally well informed on the issues raised by callers, which focused largely on energy, health care, and Social Security. Cecil Times was contacted to participate in the teleconference. Several callers cited rising gasoline prices to highlight their concerns over US energy policy and the need for American energy independence. An Eastern Shore caller, John, a Stevensville retiree, said he was “distraught” over the failure of the government to press ahead with oil drilling and other steps […]
