Sandy Maruchi Turner, Cecil County’s tourism co-ordinator, asked the County Commissioners Tuesday to break off tourism promotion programs from the county’s Economic Development department and create a separate agency, with a pay raise for the new “department head.” Turner told Cecil Times after the commissioners’ worksession that she was more familiar with the figure for her take-home pay but believed her gross annual salary is currently $67,000. She said she had no idea what the appropriate pay increase should be for her position if the Commissioners were to agree with the proposal to split tourism into a separate county department. Turner presented a “tourism strategic plan” to the commissioners, approved by the Cecil County Tourism Committee, a volunteer group that advises on tourism promotion. Included in that plan was the proposal to sever tourism programs, and the co-ordinator’s position, from the Economic Development department. The tourism office is currently located in free office space provided by the Perryville Outlets, while the Economic Development office is located in the county office building in Elkton. In the past, Turner advocated a separate tourism office in the so-called “pink house” on the edges of the Cecil College campus in North East, far from […]

Elvis, and Cecil County Economic Development Director Vernon Thompson, have already left the building but Cecil County Commissioner Diana Broomell (R-4) wanted to step on Thompson’s blue suede shoes Tuesday by trying to “fire” him in a closed door meeting, according to informed sources. Thompson formally submitted his resignation, under pressure from a three-member majority of the commissioners, on 8/30/11 and it is effective Friday. The ouster of Thompson was widely seen as political payback for running afoul of the Smipkin political machine, led by Del. Michael Smigiel and Sen. E.J. Pipkin, both R-36th District. [See previous Cecil Times article here: https://ceciltimes.com/2011/08/cecil-county-commissioners-oust-vernon-thompson-economic-development-chief-smipkins-get-even-for-political-independence/ During a public worksession of the county commissioners Tuesday morning, Broomell let it slip that she wanted to talk about “Vernon” and subsequently made a motion to have a closed door meeting to discuss a “personnel” matter. There was no advance notice to the public of a proposed secret session via the worksession agenda or website postings but nevertheless the commissioners agreed to adjourn to a secret session after their public worksession. In the secret meeting, Broomell railed against Thompson and fumed that he was attending an international economic development conference this week in Charlotte, N.C. at county […]

Cecil County Commissioners President James Mullin (R-1) claimed Saturday that Vernon Thompson was ousted as county economic development director because he didn’t “hook” military contractors to locate in Cecil County as part of the BRAC military expansion at Harford County’s Aberdeen Proving Ground. Speaking before a meeting of a church group in Earleville, Mullin asserted that “a majority” of the commissioners “felt we needed a change of quarterback.” He contended that Thompson was to blame for military contractors choosing to locate in APG’s home county while “Cecil County got zero.” Mullin made a similar pitch to the county’s Economic Development Commission a few days earlier. But the EDC wasn’t buying it: they agreed to send a letter to Thompson expressing their appreciation for his many successful efforts to promote economic development in the county. The EDC was not consulted in advance before Mullin and his usual voting partners, Commissioners Michael Dunn (R-3) and Diana Broomell (R-4), exercised their majority muscle to oust Thompson. She said it was clear that political, rather than substantive, […]
