There was anger in the air, and some gallows humor, as about 100 southern Cecil County area residents gathered in Cecilton Wednesday evening (3/20/2019) to question state and local officials on efforts to counteract the invasion of heavy trucks, and speeding cars, in the Warwick and Cecilton areas as drivers trying to avoid newly imposed tolls on US 301 in Delaware clog rural roads in Maryland. Cecil County and Maryland state officials fielded questions and provided answers, but there was a glaring absence of officials from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT), the architects of the 301 tollroad project. A small contingent of Delaware State Police truck enforcement officers did attend, apparently as a show of solidarity with their counterparts from Maryland, with whom they have recently conducted joint truck weight enforcement efforts on both sides of the state line. Toward the end of the nearly two-hour session, Cecil County Executive Alan McCarthy told the crowd that he thought an “abatement” of the tolls for a trial period, while various solutions were explored, would be a positive step. He said he would raise the prospect of suspending the tolls in further talks with DELDOT and try to enlist the help […]

Delaware is considering coming up with money to repair southern Cecil County roads damaged by trucks that have clogged local rural roads while evading new tolls on Route 301 near the state line and Middletown, DE, according to a letter released by Cecil County Executive Alan McCarthy. McCarthy said Friday (3/15/2019) that he spoke by phone recently with Jennifer Cohan, Secretary for Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DELDOT) about the problems plaguing the Warwick and Cecilton areas since the recent opening of the Route 301 tollroad, which is intended to bypass local traffic in Middletown. But the high toll rates– $4 for cars and up to $14 for trucks for a distance of just a few miles—has had the effect of dumping large volumes of traffic onto local Cecil County roads as drivers seek to avoid paying the tolls. In a letter to McCarthy after their conversation, Cohan said DELDOT would post multiple new signs in the area, continue to support joint Delaware-Maryland truck weight enforcement efforts, and would “entertain the possibility of funding road paving in your county for roads that have been impacted by either the construction of US Rt. 301 or the subsequent toll avoidance traffic.” Cohan included […]

WILL SPACE ALIENS CAPTURE RISING SUN? Cecil County politics is known for the wild and weird, from the many misadventures of the “Three Amigos” on the County Commissioners board to a nose-biting incident at a polling place on election day. Just when you thought that, several years into Charter government, things had changed for the better, or at least become more sane, now we have an out-of-this-world conspiracy theory put forward on social media by a two-time election loser who still harbors dreams of a comeback in the next election. Space aliens from Elkton secretly harbor a dastardly scheme to kidnap the town of Rising Sun, suspend its charter and confiscate the whole town, to be consumed by the County Executive—no doubt seasoned with some salsa on the side. After all, the purveyor of this science fiction conspiracy, which he calls “a theory,” tried to stoke fears of illegal aliens invading the county in his two most recent losing campaigns for county office, even though federal and state census and planning data show no influx of foreign-born residents. But the census didn’t include SPACE ALIENS! So, his new “theory” must be true, or at least suitable for Facebook fantasies. The […]
