NEWS ANALYSIS Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger (R) staged a partisan coup on the official county government website and Facebook page on Wednesday (3/17/2022) to falsely accuse two County Council members of voting to “de-fund” local police– when in fact they were simply seeking to delay a vote until they could get more information on how she is financing over $2.8 million in pay boosts for certain county employees, none of whom are Sheriff’s deputies. In addition, documents obtained by CECIL TIMES show that some of the highest pay boosts in the county would go to Hornberger’s own “executive administration” staff—which includes Lawrence Scott, the county attorney and longtime Annapolis GOP political consultant who has become the de-facto political muscle of the Hornberger administration. Scott could become the highest paid county employee under the pay plan. Hornberger began implementing the pay boosts last November, even before they were formally presented this month to the County Council, which by law must approve spending changes to the county budget. Other documents obtained by Cecil Times also show that her administration implemented major changes in the county’s pay classification system in the past few months, including creation of a new category “G” that […]

HARRIS PSEUDO POLL—YOUR EMAIL FOR YOUR VOTE It was hardly a surprise when Rep. Andy Harris (R-1) voted against both articles of the impeachment resolution against President Trump in the US House on Wednesday (12/18/2019), since he had opposed the process from the outset and holds a staunch pro-Trump voting record. So it might seem a bit surprising that he would solicit constituent’s views on the matter in a Facebook “poll” and a telephone robocall just a few days before the House vote—could a possible pro-impeachment outcome perhaps change his mind? Little danger of that, it seems, since the methodology bore no resemblance to any standard of legitimate poll-taking in the real world. The 12/16/19 telephone robocall, voiced initially by Harris, asked listeners to register whether they opposed, “strongly opposed,” supported or “strongly supported” impeachment. But respondents were subsequently told by another voice that their vote would not be recorded unless they agreed to provide their email address and agreed to receive Harris’ newsletter. If the listener declined to do so, the call was terminated without registering the individual’s opinion. Then Harris posted a similar “poll” on Facebook, but this time the personal information demands were even more intrusive: to […]

NEWS ANALYSIS The national shock and horror of last weekend’s mass shootings in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH brought out the usual “thoughts and prayers” for the victims from a bipartisan roster of public officials, but that wasn’t good enough for State Sen. Steve Hershey (R-36), who represents Cecil County and three other Eastern Shore counties in Annapolis. Virtually alone among Maryland Republicans, Hershey has taken to Twitter for several days to call out racists and suggest that President Trump didn’t go far enough to address the root causes of the terrorism that targeted Hispanics in Texas. “I’m done with the thoughts and prayers. I’m done with the phony outrage from scores of politicians. I’m angry. I’m horrified. I’m devastated. Our American culture is suffering. Let’s call this what it is: A white nationalist committed an act of terrorism.” Hershey wrote on Sunday 8/4/2019. Later, after President Trump and others insisted that mental illness was the cause, Hershey observed, “How many more times are we going to use “mental illness” as the standard response to a mass shooting? That crutch has been worn thin. Here’s what happened in El Paso: a guy drove hundreds of miles and committed an […]
