COMMENTARY Cecil County has been there, done that, with several years of political turmoil instigated by the old Smipkin political machine and its cloned “Three Amigos” rule of the old county Board of Commissioners. Now, with that machine broken down and tossed into the political landfill, two cogs in the machine are looking to clone it into a new “Zorman” machine to dominate the Elkton town council. Robert (Bob) Gorman and Chris Zeauskas are running in Tuesday’s town council elections, seeking to oust incumbents Earl Piner and Charles Givens. The Zormans are also aligned with a currently seated council member. D.J. Van Reenan, who has repeatedly attacked fellow council members and town mayor Robert Alt, often in personal terms. There’s plenty of political and substantive room to raise questions about town business or suggest different ways of doing things. But the problem with the Zormans is tactics, attacks and a past record of political shenanigans aimed solely at helping political pals and advancing their own agenda, slinging mud often at the expense of decent public servants’ reputations. For just about every valid question that could be raised—from town water rates, to crime, to town fiscal actions—the Zormans turn the issues […]

Early voting in Cecil County, a week-long opportunity for local voters to cast ballots in advance of the Tuesday 4/26/16 formal primary election day, drew 5.1 percent of eligible voters to cast ballots, with Republicans casting 469 more ballots than Democrats despite the GOP’s larger voter registration advantage, according to state Board of Elections data. As the Maryland campaigns for national, state and local candidates entered their final hours, the local race for Cecil County Executive took a negative turn not seen here since the 2012 elections when the “Smipkins” political machine—owned and operated by former state Del. Michael Smigiel and Sen. E.J. Pipkin, both R-36—distributed direct mail flyers with sharp personal attacks on local candidates. This year, the negative personal attacks have come in several last-minute flyers and a robocall initiated by County Council member Dan Schneckenberger (R-3) to attack County Council Vice President Alan McCarthy (R-1), a rival in the Republican primary election. The state Board of Elections reported that early voting turnout in Cecil County totaled 3,262 voters, or 5.15 percent of “active eligible” registered voters. For Republicans, early voter turnout totaled 1,837, or about 7 percent of the local GOP electorate. For Democrats, early voter turnout […]

NEWS ANALYSIS Cecil County Councilor Dan Schneckenburger (R-3) has announced he will run for County Executive in the 2016 Republican primary, setting up a face-off with Council Vice President Dr. Alan McCarthy (R-1) that could divide the local business community and split the mainstream GOP vote. So far, one politically unknown ultra-conservative “liberty” candidate has also filed and in the past the executive’s contest attracted a multi-candidate field largely populated by inexperienced wannabes. Before his announcement, Schneckenburger conducted “robocall” polling among county Republicans and solicited support from Second Amendment/ gun rights advocates. He has been a strong supporter of current County Executive Tari Moore, who recently announced she would not be a candidate for re-election in 2016. In a press release issued Sunday night, Schneckenburger said he decided to run because he believes the county needs “a County Executive with the courage and wisdom to lead on key initiatives: growing our local economy to create more jobs, developing a streamlined and productive government that is focused on customer service, and fighting for Cecil County interests from the state government in Annapolis. “We must continue to make investments in education, drug control, and infrastructure, and we can do this by increasing […]
