A CECIL TIMES SPECIAL REPORT The 2014 campaign for Cecil County Sheriff, always a hot political contest, is beginning already, with familiar names, switched party affiliations and some potential wildcards. The most prominent candidate so far—Chris Sutton, running in his third bid for Sheriff—faces some significant political challenges in trying to seal the deal with Cecil County voters this time around. The political jockeying to replace incumbent Sheriff Barry Janney, a Republican who said right after winning the 2010 election that this would be his last term in the job, is already beginning and for Sutton, who lost to Janney in the 2010 and 2006 elections, the campaign never really ended. But this time, Sutton has switched from the Democratic party to the Republican side. (Way back when, he was a Republican before turning to the Democrats when he ran against Janney the first time.) Sutton is certainly not alone in switching political affiliations, and county voter registration narrowly shifted to a Republican majority for the first time in 2012. (All county posts decided in partisan elections are currently filled by Republicans, except for the Register of Wills.) Sutton, a Corporal with the county Sheriff’s Department, faces potential backlash from […]

Robert “Skip” DeWitt, who lost the Democratic primary for Cecil County Sheriff in 2010, will run again for Sheriff in 2014—but this time as a Republican. In an interview with Cecil Times, DeWitt said he had changed his political party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in the past week and on Monday evening attended his first-ever GOP event, a meeting of the Cecil County Republican Club. Incumbent Republican Sheriff Barry Janney has said he will not run again in 2014 and DeWitt said he had discussed his plans with Janney after the November 2010 general election. DeWitt endorsed Janney for the general election after DeWitt lost his bid in the Democratic primary to Chris Sutton. Sutton lost to Janney in the November general election. “I’m a card-carrying Republican now,” DeWitt said. “I don’t consider the Democrats to be conservative,” he said, and “I really like what the Republicans stand for.” DeWitt’s late father was a Democrat who served as county sheriff for many years and was widely popular with local citizens of both political parties. DeWitt’s party shift could create an intriguing political scenario for the always hotly contested Cecil County Sheriff’s slot. Republican Janney faced multiple opponents in the […]

In a previous life, we wrote or edited many of the “Maryland Goes to the Polls” front page articles in The Baltimore Sun on every election day. It was a guide to basic voting information, names and political affiliations of candidates, and otherwise a chance for readers to take a deep breath and think about their choices without a lot of last minute back and forth charges and counter-charges among candidates. That might seem like a quaint custom from the days before the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and instant news, and to some extent it is. Quaint, but valid. At this late stage, with voters heading to the polls in a few hours, it is time for individuals to make their own choices– without the Cecil Times reporting every second of every comment that has been swirling through cyberspace for the past 24 hours. And there have been a lot of things written or posted by people who may take two aspirin and regret it in the morning. We will, however, bring our readers up to date on two significant issues, with links to places where you can read more information and make your own judgments. –Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich appeared at […]
