By Lou Peck Contributing Editor, Cecil Times and CongressDaily New filings with the Federal Election Commission have shed some light on who’s behind “Concerned Taxpayers of America” – a recently formed political action committee that, as of Friday, reported spending nearly $150,000 on “independent expenditure” ads opposing the re-election of Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil in Maryland’s 1st District. According to the filings, there are only two contributors behind the Concerned Taxpayers group, and they’re both taxpayers in the higher income brackets. As of Sept. 30, the two had given $500,000 to the group, with $300,000 coming from Daniel G. Schuster Inc., an Owings Mills, Md.-based concrete construction firm with major projects through Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. (The other $200,000 was from Robert Mercer, a New York hedge fund executive.) On Sept. 20, Daniel G. Schuster Inc. made a $150,000 donation to Concerned Taxpayers that was designated for “MD-01 Independent Expenditure” in the FEC filing. That almost precisely matches the $149,606 the group has spent so far on ads targeting Kratovil in his contest against Republican Andy Harris. In a separate filing with the FEC, Concerned Taxpayers reported Friday that it was spending another $64,447 on anti-Kratovil advertising, […]

The Monday, 10/11/10 televised debate between incumbent Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and former Gov. Bob Ehrlich (R) was notable in its near exclusion of anything specific and relevant to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. But then, we are all too familiar with our Annapolis politicians ignoring the Shore, especially our neck of the woods on the Upper Shore. So the final tally of the one hour debate, broadcast on WJZ-TV (Channel 13) and co-sponsored with the Baltimore Jewish Council, was O’Malley’s two references to the importance of the Chesapeake Bay and one negative reference by Ehrlich to campaign contributions to his opponent from the owners of the new slots facility in Cecil County. Not exactly inspiring to local residents who might have longed to hear about our higher than state average unemployment figures, specific job creation and economic development strategies targeted to rural areas and job training education initiatives geared toward rural areas where only a tiny minority of students go on to a four year college. A few minutes into the debate, O’Malley said he was proud to have “taken the steps” needed to “improve the health of the Bay.” And shortly thereafter, he said he would “make no […]

In a previous life, we wrote or edited many of the “Maryland Goes to the Polls” front page articles in The Baltimore Sun on every election day. It was a guide to basic voting information, names and political affiliations of candidates, and otherwise a chance for readers to take a deep breath and think about their choices without a lot of last minute back and forth charges and counter-charges among candidates. That might seem like a quaint custom from the days before the Internet, Facebook, Twitter and instant news, and to some extent it is. Quaint, but valid. At this late stage, with voters heading to the polls in a few hours, it is time for individuals to make their own choices– without the Cecil Times reporting every second of every comment that has been swirling through cyberspace for the past 24 hours. And there have been a lot of things written or posted by people who may take two aspirin and regret it in the morning. We will, however, bring our readers up to date on two significant issues, with links to places where you can read more information and make your own judgments. –Former Gov. Robert Ehrlich appeared at […]
