State Sen. E.J. Pipkin of Elkton announced Monday he will resign his 36th District Senate seat, representing Cecil County and three other counties on the Upper Shore, to seek a new career in sports management. The surprise declaration set off a buzz of political speculation on a successor, both for an appointment to fill the remainder of Pipkin’s term and for the 2014 election. Two names were in the forefront: Del. Michael Smigiel, a close Pipkin ally, and former Del. Dick Sossi—who was defeated for re-election after attacks on him by the Smipkin political organization led by Pipkin and Smigiel, both R-36. The choice of a successor for appointment to fill out the rest of Pipkin’s term is up to the Republican Central Committees in the four counties that comprise the 36th District: Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Caroline. (If the committees cannot agree on a candidate, the choice would be up to the governor.) Late Monday night, Sossi said in a statement on Facebook that many people had contacted him since the Pipkin announcement late Monday afternoon and urged him to seek appointment to the seat. “Not one to beat around the bush, I have every intention to seek […]

Dirty Web Trick Targets Diana Broomell in County Exec Race While searching around the Web, we came across a website that misappropriates the name of Cecil County Commissioner Diana Broomell (R-4), who is running in the Republican primary for Cecil County executive, and links her name to a Wikipedia definition of “obstructionism.” It’s not the first time that some name games have been played with web domain addresses in local politics. (A few years ago, another local blog outed a “Sossi for Senate” domain name registry that showed Del. Michael Smigiel (R-36) had registered the site name, apparently aimed at pre-empting its possible use for a potential run for state Senate by former Del. Dick Sossi.) But this time, someone actually created a misleading website, after the domain was registered anonymously through a private registry service on 2/11/12, according to the “Whois” directory of Internet addresses. The website, www.dianabroomell.com links to a Wikipedia page that defines and discusses “obstructionism” and offers examples, such as “workplace aggression” that is “intended to hinder an employee from performing their job or the organization from accomplishing its objectives.” The page goes on to define obstructionism “in politics” as “the deliberate interference with the progress […]

Two Eastern Shore Republican women moved up in state party leadership roles in recent days while one veteran Republican, State Sen. Nancy Jacobs (R-Harford/Cecil), lost her post as the second-ranking GOP leader in the state Senate. Queen Anne’s County Republican Diana Waterman was elected first vice-chair of the state Republican Party during a convention in Annapolis on Saturday. And earlier in the week, Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, of Talbot County, was elected to the second-ranking GOP leadership post, party whip, in the House of Delegates. But Sen. Jacobs, who became GOP whip in the state Senate two years ago, lost that post less than two weeks ago when a former Senate Minority Leader, Sen. David Brinkley of Frederick County, reclaimed a leadership position. Brinkley had stepped down from the leadership two years ago amidst allegations of domestic problems and the then-Whip, Allen Kittleman, moved up to be minority leader. Kittleman was re-elected as leader recently. Republicans lost two seats in the state Senate in the November election and now with just 12 GOP Senators, the whip has an easy job of vote counting: the entire caucus would fit in a large mini-van. Brinkley was viewed as anxious to return to a […]
