CECIL CHATTER: TODDLER TERRORISTS INVADING CECIL COUNTY IN COUNCIL RACE? Another local campaign by Dan Schneckenburger, another pitch against “illegal immigrants”—despite Census data showing minimal foreign-born population, including legal residents and citizens, in Cecil County—in his campaign flyers orchestrated by a Harford County political consultant. In his latest campaign for re-election to his District 3 County Council seat in the Republican primary, Schneckenburger lists as top priority on one of his direct mail flyers to “work with law enforcement to fight the spread of illegal immigrants in Cecil County.” This time, it’s a more generic pitch, in contrast with the detailed platform he injected into his failed race for County Executive in 2016. At that time, he outlined a plan to “investigate” businesses holding contracts with the county and terminate them if contractors “knowingly”employed any illegal immigrants. He also proposed investigating charitable groups receiving county grants to see if they provided any “aid to assist illegal immigrants.” However, a review of federal Census data and state Planning Department statistics by Cecil Times showed a minimal “foreign born” population in the county—including legal residents and US citizens who happened to have been born overseas. The rise in all “foreign born” people […]

After two weeks of political drama, two county Republican committees have sent to Gov. Martin O’Malley the name of their nominee—Del. Steve Hershey—to fill the vacant state Senate seat in Dist. 36, thus apparently ending the local process and shifting the decision to Annapolis to break a tie between Hershey and Del. Michael Smigiel. But even after the hand-writing was on the wall, Friday afternoon Smigiel launched yet another gambit to try to shift the local votes his way before the ultimate deadline of 9/10/13 for the local committees to submit their choices to the governor. The Caroline County Republican Central Committee had voted unanimously to support Hershey and on Thursday sent that tally to the governor’s appointments secretary, according to Robert Willoughby, the panel’s chair. And sources said that Kent County, which had a majority vote for Hershey, did the same. That effectively moots efforts by Smigiel to try to get yet another re-vote in the process. Smigiel won his only clear cut victory on an 8-1 vote in his home Cecil County GOP panel, which is controlled by a slate of members chosen with financial support and endorsements by Smigiel’s political organization in 2010. Then, after two votes […]

Perhaps it was the location in historic Chestertown, the home of Washington College and a tradition of political civility, that led to a particularly polite candidates’ forum Tuesday night among candidates for state Delegate and Senator in the 36th district. An earlier forum in Cecil County with many of the same candidates had lots more fireworks. There were a few moments of spirited ripostes toward the end of the program, when Democrat William Manlove, running for the 36th District seat currently held by Republican Michael Smigiel, cited the attack ads against Republican Del. Richard Sossi of Queen Anne’s County, who narrowly lost the GOP primary to Stephen S. Hershey. (Hershey, who is now unopposed in the general election, did not attend the forum that was sponsored by the Kent County League of Women Voters.) “It has disturbed many people,” Manlove said of the tactics used against Sossi. Smigiel and incumbent Sen. E.J. Pipkin campaigned as a team with Hershey and Pipkin paid for a flyer endorsing Hershey. Manlove pointed out that Smigiel was rejected by a majority of voters in Kent and Cecil counties in the last election and only won due to support from a “coalition of Del. Sossi’s […]
