Cecil County delivered a sweeping margin to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, reflecting national sentiment, while statewide Maryland voters strongly supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. Trump carried Cecil County with 27,579 votes, or 64.4 percent of the total, while Clinton received 12,651 votes, or 29.6 percent. The Libertarian ticket received 1,544 votes (3.6 percent) and the Green Party ticket had support from 533 local voters (1.2 percent.) There were also 497 “other” or write-in votes for president (1.2 percent.) Statewide, Clinton won 59.6 percent of the vote while Trump received 34.7 percent. Maryland Democrats outnumber Republicans by about a 2-to-1 margin. Cecil County is now a majority Republican county. Only one small local precinct—the Elkton-based 4-2, which casts ballots at the Cecil Manor Elementary School—gave Clinton a win, with 450 votes to 361 for Trump. It was also the only local polling place that favored Democratic US Senate candidate Chris Van Hollen (437 votes) over Republican Kathy Szeliga (359). Van Hollen won a landslide statewide victory in the race– with 60 percent of the total vote– to replace the retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski(D). The same precinct went for Republican Alan McCarthy for Cecil County executive, but […]

Cecil County voters went to the polls Tuesday in strong and steady numbers to cast ballots for President and congressional candidates and, closer to home, the county’s first-ever County Executive and two County Council members. Anecdotal reports from throughout the county indicated a strong voter turnout, with lines at some polling places early in the morning. In Cecilton, poll watchers said there was steady activity until about 11 a.m., longer than the usual morning rush. But by early afternoon, turnout had slacked off and voters moved swiftly through the voting process with no lines. County Elections Board director Evelyn Potter said most polling places were problem-free, but the Calvert elementary site had persistent difficulties with slow-to-load electronic poll books and the site had lines for much of the day. By 3 p.m., the Election Day turnout was 20,498, or 32.7 percent of the county’s eligible voters, according to Potter. Of that tally, Republican turnout was 8,781 while 8,037 Democrats cast ballots on Tuesday, with 3,680 unafilliated voters showing up at the polls. Turnout was strongest in the Chesapeake City-South (Precinct 2-1) by 3 p.m., with 49 percent turnout, while Rising Sun banquet hall (Precinct 6-1) and Bainbridge (Precinct 7-1) posted […]

CECIL CHATTER: Smigiel Tries to Skewer Del. Rudolph; Here Comes the Judge? Del. Michael Smigiel (R-36) just couldn’t resist getting in a snipe at Del. David Rudolph (D-34B) even though Smigiel wants to put the House of Delegates behind him and last week officially filed his candidacy for a Circuit Court judgeship in Cecil County. Smigiel filed a proposed redistricting map in September with the Governor’s Advisory Commission that would shift two precincts that voted heavily for Republicans in the last election out of his own 36th District and into the Democrat Rudolph’s district. Rudolph won re-election last year by a tiny margin over Ted Patterson, a Republican who is a central figure on the Smipkin political machine “slate,” and a third-party candidate. The Smigiel proposal would shift Precincts 5-1 and 5-3 from the 36th to 34B. Precinct 5-1 voters cast their ballots at the North East firehouse while 5-3 residents vote at Elk Neck Elementary School. In 2010, 5-1 voters went for Smigiel with 919 votes, to 607 votes for Democratic challenger William Manlove, or a 3-2 margin. The same precinct supported Smigiel’s political ally, Sen. E.J. Pipkin (R-36) by a 2-1 margin over Democratic challenger Steve Mumford. In […]
