HARRIS PSEUDO POLL—YOUR EMAIL FOR YOUR VOTE It was hardly a surprise when Rep. Andy Harris (R-1) voted against both articles of the impeachment resolution against President Trump in the US House on Wednesday (12/18/2019), since he had opposed the process from the outset and holds a staunch pro-Trump voting record. So it might seem a bit surprising that he would solicit constituent’s views on the matter in a Facebook “poll” and a telephone robocall just a few days before the House vote—could a possible pro-impeachment outcome perhaps change his mind? Little danger of that, it seems, since the methodology bore no resemblance to any standard of legitimate poll-taking in the real world. The 12/16/19 telephone robocall, voiced initially by Harris, asked listeners to register whether they opposed, “strongly opposed,” supported or “strongly supported” impeachment. But respondents were subsequently told by another voice that their vote would not be recorded unless they agreed to provide their email address and agreed to receive Harris’ newsletter. If the listener declined to do so, the call was terminated without registering the individual’s opinion. Then Harris posted a similar “poll” on Facebook, but this time the personal information demands were even more intrusive: to […]

The 2010 Cecil County political soap opera, “as the Republican Central Committee turns,” is back for an encore performance this year. James W. Hutchinson, a member of the former Cecil County Republican Central Committee who was elected to the panel in the September GOP primary election, resigned from the committee on Thursday, and within hours his name was removed from the committee’s membership roster on its website. Hutchinson was considered an independent-minded Republican, not aligned with any group or faction, when he was originally appointed to the committee. However, he joined the “Republicans of Cecil Fiscal Conservative Team Slate,” organized by Sen. E.J. Pipkin (R-36) and Del. Michael D. Smigiel (R-36) that ran a joint campaign, largely funded by Pipkin campaign accounts, for the nine seats on the Central Committee. A total of 22 candidates filed for the 9 seats at stake in last year’s primary, and the Pipkin-Smigiel group won a solid seven-seat majority. [See results report here: https://ceciltimes.com/2010/09/republican-committee-war-pipkin-smigiel-slate-wins-majority-seats/ Hutchinson’s resignation was characterized as prompted by personal and professional considerations, but other Republicans indicated there are deeper divisions in the committee that have been simmering for several months and the process for filling the newly vacant seat will highlight […]

(By Guest Blogger Lou Peck, Contributing Editor, Congress Daily) A newly formed committee, with the vaguely worded name of “Concerned Taxpayers of America,” late last week reported that it is putting nearly $47,000 into TV ads opposing the re-election of Maryland 1st District Democrat Frank Kratovil. But, thanks to a recent Supreme Court ruling, that’s about all the information the group needs to make public. Unlike traditional candidate and political party committees, groups such as the Concerned Taxpayers of America are not currently required to disclose who their donors are or where their money is coming from. A spokeswoman for Republican Andy Harris – the beneficiary of the Concerned Taxpayers of America advertising — said the Harris campaign does not know where and when the anti-Kratovil ads from the Concerned Taxpayers group are scheduled to run. The group’s treasurer, a Washington-based political consultant, did not return phone calls seeking comment. According to limited information filed with the Federal Election Commission, Concerned Taxpayers of America has spent just under $225,000 since its creation on Sept. 1. Of that amount, $178,000 has gone to support a Republican challenger in Oregon, with the balance of the moneyallocated for ads targeted against Kratovil. The […]
