Jason Gallion, a Harford County farmer and a former two-time candidate for the House of Delegates, has been named by Republicans in the two-counties of Senate District 35 to run unopposed on the GOP primary election ballot in June. His name would replace that of incumbent Sen. Wayne Norman, who died suddenly on Sunday. While Cecil and Harford county residents were still in a state of shock at the sudden loss of the jovial and well-liked Norman, the state Board of Elections rules provided that Monday (3/5/2018) was the last day for a party central committee to replace a candidate who had already filed or to fill a vacant slot for the June 26 primary ballot. On Monday, the state elections website listed, in bold red typeface, the death of Sen. Norman and also listed the selection of Gallion by his party central committees for a place on the ballot. District 35 covers northeastern Harford County and sections of western Cecil County. Gallion is already known in the Cecil County portion of the district from his previous 2014 run for delegate and he placed first in the Cecil County vote tally in a three-way race, but he came up short […]

Wayne Tome, Sr., a former Cecil County Commissioner, veteran firefighter and president of the county’s volunteer fire company association, filed on Wednesday as a candidate for County Executive. Tome was the only Democrat to file for any county office in this year’s election, and his entry assures voters they will have a choice of candidates for the top elected post in the county in the November general election. Four Republicans had previously filed for County Executive in their party’s primary election, which will be held on April 26. Only voters who have registered as Republicans can cast ballots in that party’s contest. Since Tome is unopposed in the Democratic primary, he is assured of a spot on the November general election ballot, facing the winner of the GOP primary. All current Cecil County elected offices (except the School Board, which is elected on a non-partisan basis) are held by Republicans. GOP voter registration holds a small edge over Democratic registrations, while there is a substantial and growing bloc of independent voters who register as “unaffiliated” with any political party. Unless there are candidates from two political parties on the November ballot, those unaffiliated voters are essentially disenfranchised, with winners determined […]

Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent who drew strong support among many Cecil County conservatives in his failed bid for a US Senate seat two years ago, has stuck his toe into Cecil County local politics this year by endorsing a controversial “Campaign for Liberty” candidate for County Council—much to the surprise and dismay of many of Bongino’s past supporters here. Why an out-of-area candidate would dabble in Cecil County Republican politics before the primary election decided the party’s standard-bearers for the general election, and do so without discussions with his local supporters, is both puzzling and troubling to many of his past admirers here. But the decision may have something to do with solidifying ultra-conservative support for his latest political foray. Bongino, who previously lived in Severna Park and now cites a residence in Frederick, is running this year for a US House seat in the sprawling 6th District covering western Maryland and part of suburban Montgomery County. Bongino faces a challenger in his own GOP primary that will decide the candidate who gets to wage an uphill struggle against the incumbent, Rep. John Delaney, a Democrat, in November. Delaney defeated longtime incumbent Republican Roscoe Bartlett in the […]
