Republican Tari Moore made history Tuesday, winning election as Cecil County’s first County Executive by defeating her Democratic rival, Pam Howard, with 52.7 percent of the vote. Republican Alan McCarthy overwhelmingly won election to the District 1 County Council seat and incumbent Robert Hodge (R) won a decisive victory to retain his county commissioner seat on the new Council in District 5. “I am humbled and honored to be part of this historic moment in Cecil County’s history,” Moore posted on her Facebook wall after the results were tallied. Cecil County also re-asserted its increasingly conservative voting patterns, rejecting the winning candidacy of President Obama, the senatorial candidate and ballot questions that won support from a majority of voters statewide. From the tabulation of the early voting counts—after voting hours and days were extended due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy—through the final Tuesday night counts of all 19 county precincts plus the early vote results that are tallied as precinct 20, Moore consistently held the lead in the election returns. Only for a brief period—when the count was at 5 precincts—did the County Executive race get neck and neck, but with Moore still in the lead. The big local […]

Fundraising for candidates in the District 1 County Council race is much like the campaign itself: Dr. Alan McCarthy, a Republican, is actively engaged while his Democratic rival, Pamela Bailey, is largely absent. McCarthy, a Chesapeake City veterinarian and businessman making his first run for countywide office, has raised a total of $22,546. Cumulatively, small donations and fundraiser ticket purchases from individual members of the Cecil County Patriots, the local “tea party” organization, add up to $930— amounting to one of his largest contributions. McCarthy, who has bought and sold investment properties for many years, also received a $1,000 donation from the Maryland Realtors Political Action Committee (PAC) in Annapolis. His financial report listed the donation under receipts from “political clubs” rather than a separate section reserved for reporting PAC money. The Realtors PAC has also donated $3,000 to the campaign of Tari Moore, a County Commissioner who is the Republican nominee for County Executive. McCarthy also received $1,200 from the Cecil County Republican Club and several other local candidates shipped funds from their own political accounts to McCarthy’s campaign. Candidate donations were received from Commissioner Robert Hodge (R-5) who is seeking re-election ($273); Judge Jane Murray ($373), who is […]

News Analysis It was one of the strangest political events of this election season Tuesday night when candidates for Cecil County Executive and County Council met in their final face-off before the upcoming election. Sweepingly broad questions, given to the candidates in advance, prompted mostly scripted responses but there were a few odd moments when one candidate suggested people vote for his opponent and another said he might “resign” if people didn’t like the job he was doing. The forum, organized by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce and held at Elkton High School, drew a crowd of about 125 people, mostly supporters of individual candidates and members of the Cecil County Patriots, the local “tea party” group that held its own candidates’ event earlier in the campaign season. Candidates were given time for opening and closing statements and in between responded to several broad questions—such as, what do you “see as your role in charter government,” “what is your demonstrated leadership experience,” what is “the state of Cecil County today” and an inquiry about the “future of Cecil County” and its business climate. Despite the bland format of the questions, Democrat Pam Howard, the former county treasurer who is […]
