Walter Rozanski has been removed from the Cecil County Ethics Commission, after his vocal criticism of several county elected officials, expressed on social media and emails, raised questions about his ability to be impartial in considering cases or rendering decisions on complaints. Rozanski had been appointed to the ethics panel with support from Councilor Diana Broomell (R-4) and he attended nearly all County Commissioner and County Council worksessions before and after his appointment to the ethics panel. During many of those Commissioner/Council sessions, Broomell often accused County Councilor Robert Hodge (R-5) and other county officials and department heads of alleged conflicts of interest and ethical violations—as Rozanski sat in the audience and listened intently. County Executive Tari Moore told Cecil Times Tuesday that she made the decision to remove Rozanski– as the county Charter empowers her to do for any and all members of county boards and commissions—because members of the ethics panel “need to have balance and impartiality.” Moore declined to get into details of her concerns about Rozanski, saying, “I don’t feel comfortable getting into specifics” and “I want to respect Walter’s privacy.” However, Cecil Times has tracked many of Rozanski’s social media comments, including postings’ on Broomell’s […]

The months-long fight over a proposed new vocational-technical high school on the Basell building site in Elkton turned into the “Basell Brawl” Tuesday, as the Three Amigos county commissioner group held firm against even considering it while county school board members vowed to fight on. Tuesday morning, the Three Amigos majority of the Cecil County Commissioners refused even to schedule a discussion to re-consider an appeal by county school officials, supported by business groups and even local fire companies, to allow a feasibility study to proceed to determine if the vacant Basell property should be converted to a new vo-tech high school. School officials met with the commissioners last Tuesday afternoon to request a reconsideration of the proposal and upped the ante on the project by offering to pay the estimated $60,000 cost of an independent engineering and feasibility study out of current school operating funds. [SEE Cecil Times report here: https://ceciltimes.com/2012/10/cecil-county-schools-up-ante-on-votech-school-but-2-amigos-balk/ ] When that meeting ended, two commissioners asked to place the issue on the 10/16/12 morning worksession agenda for further discussion and a vote. But when the agenda for the worksession came out, the schools matter was nowhere to be seen. “We agreed to put it on the […]

Commentary The popular TV show, “Mad Men,” about the machinations and over-the-top drama of the early 1960’s advertising game, has nothing on our own MAD Men of Cecil County politics—except perhaps for the broad-shouldered, grown-up suits and wide ties worn by the lead characters on TV. Trade in the suits for baggy, campaign-slogan tee shirts and athletic shoes for walking door-to-door to drop off political advertising flyers as misleading as Don Draper’s Lucky Strike ads on TV, and voila: MAD Men Cecil County style. Looking ahead to the rest of this season’s shows, the MAD Men of Cecil will be playing in the Perryville town election in May and the general election for county-wide offices in November. And there is already an assist from a Harford County conservative activist—who has received lots of political money from Smipkin aligned political committees– putting a negative “voice” on the Internet into the mouth of our otherwise perpetually silent Cecil County Commissioner, Michael (Mike) Dunn (R-3). The latest episode of our local political comedy-drama came late last week, when the Cecil County Republican Central Committee met at the Howard House in Elkton for what was billed as one of the panel’s infrequent regular meetings […]
