Commentary The popular TV show, “Mad Men,” about the machinations and over-the-top drama of the early 1960’s advertising game, has nothing on our own MAD Men of Cecil County politics—except perhaps for the broad-shouldered, grown-up suits and wide ties worn by the lead characters on TV. Trade in the suits for baggy, campaign-slogan tee shirts and athletic shoes for walking door-to-door to drop off political advertising flyers as misleading as Don Draper’s Lucky Strike ads on TV, and voila: MAD Men Cecil County style. Looking ahead to the rest of this season’s shows, the MAD Men of Cecil will be playing in the Perryville town election in May and the general election for county-wide offices in November. And there is already an assist from a Harford County conservative activist—who has received lots of political money from Smipkin aligned political committees– putting a negative “voice” on the Internet into the mouth of our otherwise perpetually silent Cecil County Commissioner, Michael (Mike) Dunn (R-3). The latest episode of our local political comedy-drama came late last week, when the Cecil County Republican Central Committee met at the Howard House in Elkton for what was billed as one of the panel’s infrequent regular meetings […]

Michael W. Dawson Answers GOP Casting Call Michael W. Dawson, who ran as the Constitution Party candidate for state Delegate in Dist. 34B last fall, is returning to the Republican Party fold and has answered the “casting call” of the local GOP Central Committee that is seeking to fill a vacant seat on the panel. In an interview with Cecil Times on Thursday, Dawson confirmed that he filed an application for the committee post and he also declared that he will run again for the Delegate seat, but this time as a Republican, in 2014. (Dawson held the balance of power in that race, registering enough third-party votes to tilt the 2010 election to incumbent Democrat David Rudolph and ensure the defeat of Republican nominee Ted Patterson.) Dawson (not to be confused with another Michael Dawson who currently sits on the Cecil County Republican Central Committee and works for Del. Michael D. Smigiel, R-36) said he felt the GOP must work to be influential at the local and state level where important decisions are made. He said his past “disenchantment” with the GOP was at the national level, when he felt that failed presidential candidate John McCain and other national […]

Like the old Abbott and Costello comedy routine (” Who’s on First?”) or the vintage comic strip of Alphonse and Gaston (“After you, sir” and “No, After You”), the candidates forum for Cecil County’s District 36 Senate and House of Delegates seats Tuesday night was an entertaining sideshow in an otherwise routine evening of multiple candidates’ recitation of their resumes and “vote for me” appeals. The forum, hosted by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce at Cecil College, let candidates have four minutes to speak to an audience of about 200 people, without any questions from a panel or moderator, and it was not set up for back and forth debate among candidates. The groundrules scheduled incumbents to speak first, followed by their election opponents. That was fine with all the other candidates for state-level office –but not Cecil County’s District 36 leadership. When incumbent Republican Sen. E.J. Pipkin’s name was called, he was not present in the auditorium. (In fact, he was seen waving from his truck, about a half-mile down the road from the college shortly before the forum began at 6:30 p.m.) So his Democratic rival Steve Mumford, of Kent County, went first. Pipkin then arrived in the […]
