NEWS ANALYSIS Cecil County’s community hospital, the more than century-old Union Hospital in Elkton, is merging with ChristianaCare in Delaware, bringing the struggling local hospital into the fold of the nationally recognized teaching hospital and trauma center that dominates health care in the First State. While many questions remain about the practicalities of the merger, the fact that the local hospital will survive is a welcome outcome that had been in some doubt for several years. Union will lose its independence and much of its identity in the agreement, which was announced Thursday (1/2/2020) after officially taking effect on January 1. The 72-bed local hospital will be officially known as ChristianaCare-Union Hospital and its Elkton real estate, which includes medical office space, will be dubbed “ChristianaCare-Cecil County.” Union, and its parent organization Affinity Health Alliance, now joins the Delaware institution which operates its main hospital in Newark, DE, Wilmington Hospital in that city, and the ChristianaCare emergency hospital in Middletown, DE. The Middletown operation, opened in 2013 with a $34 million, 36,500 square foot emergency medical services facility, is utilized by many southern Cecil County residents. Christiana officials said in a written statement that the process of fully integrating the […]

Delaware is considering coming up with money to repair southern Cecil County roads damaged by trucks that have clogged local rural roads while evading new tolls on Route 301 near the state line and Middletown, DE, according to a letter released by Cecil County Executive Alan McCarthy. McCarthy said Friday (3/15/2019) that he spoke by phone recently with Jennifer Cohan, Secretary for Delaware’s Department of Transportation (DELDOT) about the problems plaguing the Warwick and Cecilton areas since the recent opening of the Route 301 tollroad, which is intended to bypass local traffic in Middletown. But the high toll rates– $4 for cars and up to $14 for trucks for a distance of just a few miles—has had the effect of dumping large volumes of traffic onto local Cecil County roads as drivers seek to avoid paying the tolls. In a letter to McCarthy after their conversation, Cohan said DELDOT would post multiple new signs in the area, continue to support joint Delaware-Maryland truck weight enforcement efforts, and would “entertain the possibility of funding road paving in your county for roads that have been impacted by either the construction of US Rt. 301 or the subsequent toll avoidance traffic.” Cohan included […]

NEWS ANALYSIS It was a snowy December night in Middletown, DE a decade or so ago, when the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT) held a public meeting to showcase its plans for a Route 301 toll road around the rapidly growing town. Mark Tudor, the project director, glibly touted the glossy pictures and charts around the room, and responded dismissively to citizens’ questions. But he wasn’t quite prepared for Santa Claus. Outside the meeting, Dr. David Beste, a veterinarian and owner of the Middletown Veterinary Hospital, wore a Santa suit, accompanied by a four-legged crew of protestors, with faux antlers on their heads and signs around their necks. “I need my Vet;” “Don’t take my Doc,” and “Pets, not trucks,” were a few of the canine complaints. DELDOT wanted to put toll booths and/or approach lanes for toll collection on the hospital property, located at the intersection of 301 and Del. 299, taking a huge swath of the site where Beste had just completed a major expansion and renovation of his hospital, located a short distance from Warwick in Cecil County, MD. The road plan would have made his property unusable for a vet hospital and negated his major investment […]
