Tax policies and their delicate balance with revenues needed to operate essential county services are serious business and should be discussed in a detailed, deliberate manner. But Broomell offered two major tax-cutting proposals in bare-bones fashion– they could have been written on a cocktail napkin, with room to spare– and without details of the revenue impact on county services or which services might have to be cut due to reduced revenues. And the timing of her proposals—after a previously announced deadline for submission of new legislation for enactment before a Charter-established cut-off for Council action in an […]

Updated results from the June 24 primary elections, including provisional ballots and two rounds of absentee vote counts, confirm the initial election night results in Cecil County contests and the fight for a Delegate seat in District 36—with incumbent Michael Smigiel losing his seat by even more votes. While the state elections board had not yet certified the final results statewide, Cecil County (and the other three counties included in District 36) had completed their counts of all outstanding provisional and absentee ballots on Monday. The tallies confirm the election night winners of three Cecil County Council seats, the Sheriff’s race, State’s Attorney contest and three Delegate seats in District 36. For Cecil County Sheriff, Scott Adams expanded his strong majority in the Republican primary, picking up 79 votes from provisional and absentee ballots to tally 3,761 votes or 54.9 percent of all votes cast in the crowded five-candidate race. Chris Sutton picked up 38 votes in the post-election counts, for a total of 1,876 votes or 27.4 percent. In the Democratic primary for Sheriff, W. Danny Blackburn ended up with 1,145 votes in a four-way race, or 31.6 percent of the vote in that primary contest. For several days […]

In a stunning rebuke, Cecil County voters Tuesday ousted incumbent County Councilors Diana Broomell and Michael Dunn, while Joyce Bowlsbey won the Republican nod to return to her District 2 seat. George Patchell and Dan Schneckenburger won the GOP nominations in Districts 4 and 3, respectively. The primary election ended a years-long drama of Broomell dominating County Council meetings with verbal attacks on fellow lawmakers, county officials, and state agencies that often led to her being gaveled out of order and the summoning of Sheriff’s deputies on two occasions to ensure order at meetings. The vote tallies also delivered a repudiation of two “Campaign for Liberty” candidates who repeatedly engaged in cyber-attacks against their opponents with allegations that often bore little resemblance to the facts. And the defeats of Broomell and Dunn marked the end of the former “Three Amigos” faction that had ruled the old county Board of Commissioners, along with former commissioner James Mullin. With all precincts reporting, Patchell won a commanding 53.4 percent of the vote in a three way race for the District 4 seat, with 3,384 votes. Michael A. Dawson (known locally as MAD Dawson) polled 24.7 percent, with 1,570 votes, and Broomell won just […]
