Cecil County Commissioner Tari Moore (R-2) has decided to run for County Executive in the 2012 election, seeking the first-ever executive position in county government. Moore had been known to be considering a run for the post for some time but the freshman commissioner, who won her current seat in the 2010 election, told Cecil Times on Saturday that “A decision has been made…and the decision is to run.” Moore’s intentions were initially disclosed by Keith Baynes during a fundraiser at his Calvert home for his own 2012 election campaign to retain his seat as a Cecil County Circuit Court judge. Baynes introduced her to the crowd of about 200 people as “a candidate for County Executive.” That announcement was greeted with some gasps and hearty applause from the politically mixed crowd. In her brief tenure as a commissioner, Moore has tackled some of the thorniest and most complex issues facing the county. She sounded the initial alarm locally about “Plan Maryland,” a state initiative that many county officials around the state fear could result in state limits on most growth and supersede local planning authority. She has also been active in the Maryland Association of Counties, representing Cecil on […]

Cecil County’s smallest town, Port Deposit (population 653 in the latest census) is gearing up for a vigorous campaign for mayor, with one current and two former mayors contending for the post in the upcoming May town election. It is a study in contrasts between small town dedication to service and some of our county-wide agenda-driven politics. Current Mayor Kerry Anne Abrams, a public schools paraprofessional assigned to Bainbridge elementary, has more time on the job than her rivals, Wayne Tome—also a former Cecil County Commissioner—and Rob Flayhart. Abrams served as mayor from 1996-99, filling a vacancy, before being elected in her own right in 2007. Tome served as the town’s mayor from 1999 to 2003, when he lost to Flayhart, who served as mayor from 2003 to 2007. Port’s residents are a hardy lot, stoically braving intermittent flooding from the adjacent Susquehanna River on a regular basis when the up-river Conowingo dam opens its floodgates as it did recently. It is a town of hopes and dreams, from its long ago heyday as a bustling port through decades of dwindling commerce and the closing of the Bainbridge naval facility to more recent dreams of revival and rebirth that often […]

Two Eastern Shore Republican women moved up in state party leadership roles in recent days while one veteran Republican, State Sen. Nancy Jacobs (R-Harford/Cecil), lost her post as the second-ranking GOP leader in the state Senate. Queen Anne’s County Republican Diana Waterman was elected first vice-chair of the state Republican Party during a convention in Annapolis on Saturday. And earlier in the week, Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, of Talbot County, was elected to the second-ranking GOP leadership post, party whip, in the House of Delegates. But Sen. Jacobs, who became GOP whip in the state Senate two years ago, lost that post less than two weeks ago when a former Senate Minority Leader, Sen. David Brinkley of Frederick County, reclaimed a leadership position. Brinkley had stepped down from the leadership two years ago amidst allegations of domestic problems and the then-Whip, Allen Kittleman, moved up to be minority leader. Kittleman was re-elected as leader recently. Republicans lost two seats in the state Senate in the November election and now with just 12 GOP Senators, the whip has an easy job of vote counting: the entire caucus would fit in a large mini-van. Brinkley was viewed as anxious to return to a […]
