Cecil County Executive Alan McCarthy reflected on his four months in office Thursday (3/30/2017) as a “hectic” but “educational experience,” with steps already taken to reorganize county government, re-order transportation priorities, and promote business development. But he warned that the county faces a fiscal “empty bag” due to stalled revenues, rising costs, state spending mandates and past county government policies. McCarthy spoke at an event sponsored by the Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government (CBL), a political action committee that supported his candidacy in the 2016 elections, at Schaefer’s in Chesapeake City. The gathering was billed as marking the new county executive’s first 100 days in office, but the timing was a bit off: McCarthy said his calendar pegged his tenure as 117 days, “but who’s counting?” The new county executive will unveil his first budget on Friday, for the 2018 Fiscal year, and without going into any financial details, McCarthy indicated that there would be difficult choices ahead. And he said he would not take the easy way out of past county leaders to raid emergency reserve funds to balance the budget. Key factors, he said, are the fact that the local economy and residents’ incomes are still recovering […]

Cecil County hosted a party for Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan Thursday night to support his re-election campaign funds and when the guest of honor couldn’t make it to the event, the party went on—with a giant ‘get well’ card and support for Hogan in his battle against cancer. Organizers of the event, the Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government political action committee (PAC), had hoped until just a few hours before the event that Hogan would be able to attend. But, on his first day back on the job after enduring a grueling round of intensive chemotherapy in a Baltimore hospital, the trek to Cecil was apparently too much to expect. Mario Gangemi, vice-chair of the CBL group, told the audience that organizers of the event decided to go ahead with the fundraiser to “show him the love that Cecil County has for Governor Hogan.” But despite disappointment at the governor’s absence, guests—who paid $100 per ticket, plus an extra $150 for a VIP meet-and-greet session—enjoyed a champagne toast and munched on roast beef and fried chicken at The Wellwood in Charlestown. The tent was full of enthusiasm for Hogan’s policies thus far in his first few months in office […]

The 2014 Cecil County political contests took an interesting turn this week when George Patchell, executive director of the local YMCA, filed as a Republican candidate for County Council in District 4 to seek the seat held by controversial incumbent Diana Broomell. And Michael A. Dawson—known locally as “MAD Mike”—withdrew his candidacy for a state Senate seat in a newly drawn Cecil and Harford county district. Patchell, the longtime executive director of the Cecil County YMCA and a local resident whose family is well known in the area, filed his candidacy on Wednesday for the Republican nomination for the District 4 County Council seat. That seat is currently held by Broomell, a Republican who has been aggressively at odds with her fellow GOP County Council members for over a year. Another Republican, Michael W. Dawson—known locally, and in his ballot filings, as “Good Mike”—had already filed to run against Broomell. MWD Dawson has taken pains to differentiate himself from Michael A. Dawson, a highly controversial former Perryville town commissioner known locally as “MAD Mike” Dawson, who had filed to run for a state Senate seat but this week withdrew his candidacy. Apart from the classic Maryland political ploy of “name’s […]
