NEWS ANALYSIS Cecil County Council member Jackie Gregory (R-5) has filed as a candidate in the 2022 Republican primary for state Delegate in District 36, potentially casting aside the Council seat to which she won re-election just 14 months ago and challenging the all-Republican delegation that has worked together as a “team” for the past eight years to represent the four counties that comprise the 36th. If she succeeds, it would mean that the Cecil County Republican Central Committee would get a second opportunity to pick a successor to fill a vacant County Council seat, as the panel did recently to submit a list of its choices to replace Council member George Patchell (R-4) But Patchell, who resigned to become the Perryville town administrator, had just a year left on his term while an appointed replacement for Gregory would get to serve for more than two years without having to stand before voters. Gregory filed her candidacy papers on 1/5/2022 and created a new campaign finance committee to support her bid to move her political career to Annapolis. Unlike the three incumbent delegates, who are banned from campaign fundraising during the General Assembly session that begins on Wednesday, Gregory will […]

CECIL CHATTER: TODDLER TERRORISTS INVADING CECIL COUNTY IN COUNCIL RACE? Another local campaign by Dan Schneckenburger, another pitch against “illegal immigrants”—despite Census data showing minimal foreign-born population, including legal residents and citizens, in Cecil County—in his campaign flyers orchestrated by a Harford County political consultant. In his latest campaign for re-election to his District 3 County Council seat in the Republican primary, Schneckenburger lists as top priority on one of his direct mail flyers to “work with law enforcement to fight the spread of illegal immigrants in Cecil County.” This time, it’s a more generic pitch, in contrast with the detailed platform he injected into his failed race for County Executive in 2016. At that time, he outlined a plan to “investigate” businesses holding contracts with the county and terminate them if contractors “knowingly”employed any illegal immigrants. He also proposed investigating charitable groups receiving county grants to see if they provided any “aid to assist illegal immigrants.” However, a review of federal Census data and state Planning Department statistics by Cecil Times showed a minimal “foreign born” population in the county—including legal residents and US citizens who happened to have been born overseas. The rise in all “foreign born” people […]

It’s been a few months since Cecil Times posted on our website, or on Facebook, but the radio silence wasn’t an abandonment of the role CT has played for the past eight years as an independent voice in our local conversations about Cecil County and Maryland government, politics and assorted oddities. Sometimes real life has a way of taking center stage in one’s time and priorities. A close family member has struggled with a serious medical diagnosis, hospitalization, surgery and recovery and we were along for the journey as caregiver, medical appointment note-taker, WebMD researcher and even a nervous time as home injection-giver. Much of the past few months is a bit of a blur by now, as we celebrate the positive outcome. There is still a belated and unrelated problem, discovered in follow-up medical testing, that will require another surgery soon but we are assured by some of the best medical experts that this outcome, too, will be positive. Living in Maryland, we are blessed with some of the best, world-class medical diagnostic and treatment options available just a short drive away. The Johns Hopkins University Hospital was our savior and supportive guide on our journey, led by a […]
