The COVID-19 virus pandemic escalated its destructive path on Thursday (4/2/2020) as the Maryland death toll doubled in two days and out-of-work state and local residents filed massive new claims for unemployment benefits. The state Health Department posted new figures on the number of confirmed cases Thursday morning, showing 2,331 Marylanders have tested positive for the virus and 36 people have died. On Tuesday, the death toll stood at 18, with 1,660 confirmed cases. The number of confirmed cases will no doubt rise significantly as the state, which was late to launch widescale testing, began drive-through testing programs on Wednesday at three Motor Vehicle emissions sites and FedEx field in Prince George’s County. In Cecil County, which recorded its first fatality linked to the virus earlier this week, county health officials reported early Thursday afternoon that the number of confirmed cases of the virus stood at 23. The state Health Department’s report, posted several hours earlier, listed Cecil’s figure as 20 cases. The statewide report generally lags local county figures by a day or more. Meanwhile, 84,230 Marylanders filed new unemployment claims last week, according to numbers released Thursday by Maryland’s Department of Labor– almost double the number of people […]

The COVID-19 pandemic is expanding rapidly across Maryland, as the number of confirmed cases more than doubled in Cecil County—growing from 4 to 9 confirmed cases– and grew exponentially statewide in just a day. The economic toll of the virus also made its first measurable impact, with soaring applications for jobless benefits in the state and locally, due to business closings related to the virus. On Thursday (3/26/2020) morning, the state Department of Health posted updated numbers for confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus statewide and by county locations. Those figures listed 580 confirmed cases of COVID-19—an increase of 157 new cases over the previous day, for the largest one-day increase so far. “We are only at the beginning of this crisis, in our state, in the National Capital Region, and in America, said Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan. “As I have repeatedly stressed, we should continue to expect the number of cases to dramatically and rapidly rise.” . “This battle is going to be much harder, take much longer, and be much worse than almost anyone comprehends. We have never faced anything like this ever before, and I continue to urge the people of our state to stay in place […]

WILL SPACE ALIENS CAPTURE RISING SUN? Cecil County politics is known for the wild and weird, from the many misadventures of the “Three Amigos” on the County Commissioners board to a nose-biting incident at a polling place on election day. Just when you thought that, several years into Charter government, things had changed for the better, or at least become more sane, now we have an out-of-this-world conspiracy theory put forward on social media by a two-time election loser who still harbors dreams of a comeback in the next election. Space aliens from Elkton secretly harbor a dastardly scheme to kidnap the town of Rising Sun, suspend its charter and confiscate the whole town, to be consumed by the County Executive—no doubt seasoned with some salsa on the side. After all, the purveyor of this science fiction conspiracy, which he calls “a theory,” tried to stoke fears of illegal aliens invading the county in his two most recent losing campaigns for county office, even though federal and state census and planning data show no influx of foreign-born residents. But the census didn’t include SPACE ALIENS! So, his new “theory” must be true, or at least suitable for Facebook fantasies. The […]
