The campaign for the Republican nomination for Cecil County Executive drew a total of over $60,000 in contributions and fundraiser ticket purchases for the leading contenders and a business political action committee active in the campaign, according to state Board of Elections records. The latest reports were filed on 8/30/16, covering shortly before the April 26 primary election through mid-August. Going into the November general election, County Council vice president Alan McCarthy, the winner of the Republican primary for County Executive, has a remaining campaign warchest of $11,654. His opponent, Democrat Wayne Tome of Port Deposit, was unopposed in his party primary and had minimal campaign finance activity this year. But Tome recently held a campaign fundraiser in Port and is expected to take a more active role on the campaign trail in the next two months. Tome had a $1,707 carry-over balance from 2014 in his campaign fund from previous elections but has filed affadavits stating he has not yet raised or spent over $1,000 in his new campaign for county executive. In the contested Republican primary for County Executive, McCarthy was the top vote getter, with 4,448 votes or 39.4 percent of the total votes cast in the […]

NEWS ANALYSIS Who knew there were so many “socialists” in conservative Cecil County? Or is that “Hillary haters?” Bernie Sanders, a self-professed lifelong “socialist,” eked out a 28-vote victory in Cecil County over state and national front-runner Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary for President in the April 26 election, according to final vote tallies issued on Monday– including counts of provisional ballots and two rounds of absentee ballot counts. Clinton was slightly ahead in early voting, election day balloting and early counts of absentee and provisional ballots in Cecil County, but the final count of additional absentee ballots resulted in 3,562 total votes for Sanders and 3,534 votes for Clinton. Statewide, Clinton won the Democratic primary with 62.5 percent, to Sanders’ 33.8 percent, according to state Board of Elections reports. Cecil County was one of only four in the state to favor Sanders over Clinton. All those counties—Allegany, Garrett, and Carroll, as well as Cecil—are generally conservative politically. The other counties have long leaned Republican overall, while Cecil County shifted to a GOP voter registration majority more recently. Local Democrats have usually been more conservative than fellow party members elsewhere in the state. Given the more conservative views of […]

A CECIL TIMES SPECIAL REPORT With less than a month before the primary elections for Cecil County Executive and County Council, some candidates have surged to the forefront in campaign fundraising and activity while a recent candidates’ forum displayed some not-ready-for-prime-time verbal paralysis. Top fundraiser for County Executive is current County Council Vice President Alan McCarthy (R-1), with mostly local donations, while his three GOP primary rivals lag in donations and rely heavily on out of area supporters. In addition, during a candidates’ forum sponsored by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce at Cecil College in North East on 3/29/16, contenders answered questions and outlined their campaign agendas. Most of the candidates handled the generally softball questions with ease—with the exception of one political newcomer who choked up under the pressure of even describing his own positions and reasons for running for office. Alan McCarthy’s latest campaign finance report, the pre-primary filing required on 3/22/16, showed a bank balance of $9,343, after new contributions of $8,150 and expenditures of $1,789 for the period from 1/14/16 through 3/15/16. His account had a carry-over balance of $2,982 from previous fundraising efforts. McCarthy’s contributions came from a range of well-known local Republicans and […]
