Cecil County Executive Tari Moore, a Republican, wrote in a Facebook post Sunday that she is “shocked” and “appalled” at negative local reaction to her recent endorsement of a Democrat, Courtney Watson, who is running for Howard County executive against a well-known statewide Republican. Moore has not responded to repeated messages from Cecil Times requesting an interview about her actions, and on Monday a staff aide said Moore would not respond to questions and directed attention to her Facebook posting on the Republican Club of Cecil County page. (So we’ll post some of our questions below here…) [SEE previous Cecil Times report on the endorsement, and GOP fallout from it, here: https://ceciltimes.com/2014/10/cecil-county-exec-tari-moore-breaks-gop-ranks-to-support-democrat-in-howard-county-exec-race-republicans-conservative-uproar/ ] In her post, Moore said she was “shocked and appalled to read the comments regarding my endorsement of Courtney Watson, who is running for County Executive in Howard County. Shocked, because I doubt any of you have even met Courtney, let alone worked with her as I have. Appalled, because judgment was passed without knowing any facts.” Moore and Watson, who has served two terms on the Howard County Council, have worked together in a women’s leadership group of the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO).
The Cecil County Democrat Club has endorsed two sitting Circuit Court Judges—Keith Baynes, a Republican, and Jane Cairns Murray, a Democrat—in this year’s elections to retain their seats. The bipartisan endorsement parallels a previous move by the Republican Club of Cecil County. Wyatt Wallace, president of the Democrats’ group, said the membership voted unanimously to endorse Baynes and Murray at a meeting last week. “We felt the vetting process they went through was so extensive,” he said, that the two incumbents merited the club’s support. Baynes and Murray were appointed to their seats by Gov. Martin O’Malley, after they were recommended by a judicial nominating panel. A third candidate is on the ballot, Del. Michael Smigiel (R-36), who did not go through the vetting process for appointment to a court seat and chose instead to file as an election challenger this year. Circuit Court judges must run for election to their seats in the first election after their appointment but they run on a non-partisan basis in both the Republican and Democratic primaries. With two bench seats at stake, the two top vote-getters in each primary would proceed to a general election, with a potential three-way contest if different candidates […]

Incumbent Delegate Richard Sossi (R-36) is melting the campaign finances of his Republican primary challenger, Steve Hershey, who features a modified version of the chocolate bar in his campaign signs and ads. But a last-minute flap over which candidate is endorsed by Robert Ehrlich, the expected Republican candidate for governor, has really heated things up. Since no Democratic candidate has filed for the Queen Anne’s County seat in the 36th, the GOP primary will decide that race. (There are three Delegate seats in District 36 and one resident Delegate each from Queen Anne’s, Kent and Cecil Counties is elected by voters in those counties, plus half of Caroline County.) Sossi also had no opposition in the GOP primary until a last minute challenge was filed by Stephen S. Hershey, Jr., of Queenstown. (See previous Cecil Times report on the contest here: https://ceciltimes.wordpress.com/2010/07/28/36th-delegate-seat-with-gop-friends-like-this-who-needs-democrats/ ) Sossi has been ahead in the campaign fundraising race by a better than 3-to-1 margin but in the final days leading up to the Sept. 14 primary, the contest has taken on a war of words twist. Hershey recently sent out a four-page flyer, citing his past state employment as a political appointee during the Ehrlich administration in Annapolis. The flyer seemed to suggest […]
