Absentee ballot counts in state District 36 on Thursday confirm that incumbent Republican Del. Michael Smigiel of Cecil County is going down to defeat, just as it was indicated on election night, to a Caroline County candidate, Jeff Ghrist, in the Republican primary election. Newly updated vote tallies in the four counties of the 36th district show that Smigiel lacked adequate support of area voters, especially in his Cecil County home base. Indeed, Smigiel is the only major candidate in the four-county District 36 to lose, and by a substantial margin, his home county. After vote counts of early voting, election day, and first absentee ballot tallies counted on 6/26/14, Smigiel ended up in third place in his home Cecil County. The 36th District covers four counties—parts of Cecil and Caroline counties and all of Kent and Queen Anne’s counties—but only provides three seats in the General Assembly in Annapolis. As a result, one county will be without a “resident” delegate, which for 20 years has been Caroline County. But the initial results of the GOP primary elections show that incumbent Cecil County Republican Smigiel has fallen so short in voter support in the district that Caroline County is likely […]

SOME POLLING PLACES WRONG ON SAMPLE BALLOTS; EARLY VOTING BEGINS THURSDAY About 30 percent of Cecil County voters eligible to cast ballots in the upcoming primary elections received sample ballots that listed the wrong polling place at which to vote, Cecil County Board of Elections officials concede, blaming the snafu on a printer’s error. But the erroneous local polling place locations will not affect voters who choose to cast their ballots early, since there is only one early voting location: the county administration building on Chesapeake Blvd. in Elkton. Early voting begins on Thursday, 6/12/14, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Debbie Towery, supervising her first election as the new director of the local elections office, said Wednesday that a printer hired to publish the sample ballots had a “computer database glitch” that directed some voters to the wrong polling place. The error affected the sample ballots of Democrats and Republicans equally, Towery said, and there was no pattern to the errors. Some people were directed clear across the county to schools or fire stations many miles from their homes. “The actual ballots people received are correct,” Towery said, and list the appropriate candidates that will appear on the voter’s […]

As the Cecil County Sheriff’s race enters the home stretch before the June 24 primary elections, the Republican primary’s leading contenders are neck and neck in campaign finances. But the Scott Adams campaign has generated a strong wave of new contributions while three-time candidate Chris Sutton drew fewer new donations and had over $7,000 in unpaid campaign bills, according to new state finance reports. Adams, a veteran Deputy but political newcomer, filed as a candidate in early April, 2013 and had no hold-over campaign warchest from previous years to draw upon. But the latest campaign finance reports show Adams has continued to draw substantial new donations, totaling $31,538 from 1/9/14 through 5/20/14, according to the required first pre-primary report filed this week with the State Board of Elections. In his previous finance report filed in January and covering 2013, Adams reported contributions of $31,067—for a total donation tally of $62,605. In contrast, Sutton’s latest campaign finance report lists $20,547 in new contributions in the same 1/9/14 through 5/20/14 time period. Previously, his January report listed $39,634 in contributions covering 2013, for a tally of $60,181. In addition, Sutton had a carry-over balance of $11,073 following his past fundraising from his […]
