In the first four days of early voting for the November general election, statewide turnout surged over the last mid-term national election four years ago, while in Cecil County, where few local races are contested on the ballot, early turnout was sluggish. But if the local-only contests drew yawns, and the top-of-the-tickets gubernatorial race tilts heavily toward incumbent GOP governor Larry Hogan, the most local excitement seems to be coming from the US House race in District 1 between incumbent Republican Andy Harris and Democratic challenger Jesse Colvin. The district covers all of the Eastern Shore, including Cecil, as well as parts of Carroll, Harford and Baltimore counties. In multiple Facebook videos and a Saturday robocall, Harris appeared to be tugging on Hogan’s popular coattails, imploring voters to support the “Hogan/Harris team” and warning of dire consequences if state Republicans lose their party’s lone GOP seat in the congressional delegation. Colvin went on the TV airwaves with a new ad, playing almost non-stop on local news programs’ commercials airtime, firing handguns with his Republican wife at a gun range to highlight his military background and a bipartisan approach to politics. Local early voting began last Thursday and continues through Thursday […]

Cecil County voters took advantage of eight days of early voting for the 2016 presidential, state and local election as 10,809 ballots were cast, or 16.6 percent of “active eligible” voters, according to the state Board of Elections (BOE). Republicans cast a slightly higher proportion of their votes than Democrats. Early voting was conducted at one polling place—the county administration building in Elkton—and ended on Thursday 11/3/16, after voting began the previous Thursday. Throughout the period, voter traffic was steady, with the highest turnout—1,790 people—on the first day of voting. Cecil County’s early turnout rate lagged behind the statewide tally of 22 percent of registered voters casting ballots ahead of the Tuesday 11/8/16 Election Day. But Cecil’s early vote was well ahead of the 2012 turnout—the last presidential election year. That early vote period was a day shorter than this year’s but 9.42 percent of then-registered local voters cast early ballots. The hotly contested presidential race between Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, and Donald Trump, a Republican is clearly fueling voter interest in this year’s elections. Locally, the only partisan contest is for Cecil County Executive—between Alan McCarthy, a Republican, and Wayne L. Tome, Sr, a Democrat. A non-partisan race for […]

Early voting in the Presidential, state and local elections begins in Cecil County on Thursday 10/27/16, as Republicans continue to widen their voter registration edge over Democrats in the county. State Board of Elections statistics show a small uptick in the total number of registered voters in the county since the April primary election but there was a broader shift to Republican Party registrations, indicating some of the new GOP voters were likely former Democrats or independents. There was a total of 64,896 “active” eligible voters in the county as of 10/23/16, the state BOE reported, including 27,579 registered Republicans, 22,476 Democrats, and 13,717 “unaffiliated” or independent voters. In addition, 399 voters registered as members of the Libertarian Party, 148 registered as Green Party members and 577 voters listed themselves as “other” party members. Under a change in state election law applicable for the first time this year, voters will still be able to register to vote during the weeklong early voting period that begins on Thursday . Early voting will be conducted at the county administration building on Chesapeake Blvd. in Elkton, from 10/27 through 11/3, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The General Election Day voting will […]
