COMMENTARY Cecil County has been there, done that, with several years of political turmoil instigated by the old Smipkin political machine and its cloned “Three Amigos” rule of the old county Board of Commissioners. Now, with that machine broken down and tossed into the political landfill, two cogs in the machine are looking to clone it into a new “Zorman” machine to dominate the Elkton town council. Robert (Bob) Gorman and Chris Zeauskas are running in Tuesday’s town council elections, seeking to oust incumbents Earl Piner and Charles Givens. The Zormans are also aligned with a currently seated council member. D.J. Van Reenan, who has repeatedly attacked fellow council members and town mayor Robert Alt, often in personal terms. There’s plenty of political and substantive room to raise questions about town business or suggest different ways of doing things. But the problem with the Zormans is tactics, attacks and a past record of political shenanigans aimed solely at helping political pals and advancing their own agenda, slinging mud often at the expense of decent public servants’ reputations. For just about every valid question that could be raised—from town water rates, to crime, to town fiscal actions—the Zormans turn the issues […]

The election contest for Cecil County Commissioner in the Elkton-based 2nd District has triggered large campaign donations. But Democratic candidate Earl Piner, Sr., has not identified any of the sources of $14,611 in donations to his campaign. His Republican opponent, Tari Moore, fully disclosed the sources of her more than $20,100 in donations. State election law requires candidates to report individual or business donations and total amounts of funds raised, and identities of business or individual donors who contributed to their campaign funds, if the candidate’s total fundraising is more than $1,000. However, in his two filings with the state Board of Elections, Piner did not disclose a single donor to his campaign. All of his donations are listed as “lump sum” contributions, with no names, addresses or identities of those who are bankrolling his campaign. According to filings with the state Board of Elections, Piner reported contributions of $8,897 on his 9/3/10 report and $5,714 on his state campaign finance report filed 10/22/10 – for a total of $14,611. None of his filings disclose who donated the money. In an interview with Cecil Times, Piner was hostile, suggesting that questioning his campaign finance reports was tantamount to challenging his […]

Candidates for three Cecil County Commissioner seats at stake in this year’s elections debated on jobs and county schools Thursday night, with two of the contests drawing the sharpest comments, and contrasts, between the contenders. Carl Roberts, the former superintendent of schools who is running as a Democrat for the 4th District seat, disputed the assertion by his opponent, Diana Broomell, a Republican, that the county schools budget accounts for more than 61 percent of the overall county budget. “It never was 61 percent—ever,” during his tenure as superintendent, he said. Roberts said the schools budget, now 47 percent of the county budget, declined as a proportion of the overall county budget on his watch, as the county needed to shift funds to roads and other needs. “You do not have accurate numbers,” he told his opponent, suggesting she hadn’t done her homework on the schools or other issues. The candidates appeared at a forum sponsored by the Cecil County Patriots, the local “tea party” group that has sponsored previous forums for commissioner candidates during the primary election season. The forum, attended by a smaller audience than past events, was hosted by an independent moderator, Michael Futty, from Toastmasters International. […]
