NEWS ANALYSIS Never let it be said that perennial candidate and three-time loser Michael D. Smigiel, Sr., doesn’t have any more political tricks up his sleeves, even if they aren’t the sleeves on a Cecil County judicial robe that he desperately wants to wear. Now he’s trying for a two-fer: a judicial seat for himself and his old District 36 state Delegate seat for his son and namesake, Michael D. Smigiel, Jr., a young filmmaker and video photographer. Daddy Smigiel lost his delegate seat in the Republican primary in 2014, when he didn’t even carry his home base of Cecil County in the four-county area covered by District 36. Daddy has also lost a previous run for a judicial seat and lost badly two years ago in a GOP primary challenge to incumbent Congressman Andy Harris (R-1st). Smigiel Sr. filed on Monday as a candidate for a Circuit Court judicial seat, running against incumbent judge Will Davis. Davis was appointed by Gov. Hogan to fill a vacancy on the local bench in 2016 and, under state law, must stand before the voters in this year’s elections for a 15-year term. (Davis was recommended for the court by an independent nominating […]

COMMENTARY Cecil County has been there, done that, with several years of political turmoil instigated by the old Smipkin political machine and its cloned “Three Amigos” rule of the old county Board of Commissioners. Now, with that machine broken down and tossed into the political landfill, two cogs in the machine are looking to clone it into a new “Zorman” machine to dominate the Elkton town council. Robert (Bob) Gorman and Chris Zeauskas are running in Tuesday’s town council elections, seeking to oust incumbents Earl Piner and Charles Givens. The Zormans are also aligned with a currently seated council member. D.J. Van Reenan, who has repeatedly attacked fellow council members and town mayor Robert Alt, often in personal terms. There’s plenty of political and substantive room to raise questions about town business or suggest different ways of doing things. But the problem with the Zormans is tactics, attacks and a past record of political shenanigans aimed solely at helping political pals and advancing their own agenda, slinging mud often at the expense of decent public servants’ reputations. For just about every valid question that could be raised—from town water rates, to crime, to town fiscal actions—the Zormans turn the issues […]

Carrie L. Taylor, the former treasurer of the Cecil County Republican Central Committee, has pleaded guilty to felony charges of stealing over $8,859 from donations and using the money to buy personal airline tickets and membership in an online dating service, according to the Office of the State Prosecutor. She will be sentenced November 17 and faces a maximum of 25 years in prison. Taylor appeared in the Anne Arundel County Circuit Court on Monday to enter her guilty plea before Judge Michele D. Jaklitsch, who accepted the plea and restricted Taylor to her home, except for work, pending the November sentencing. Since Taylor entered a plea deal and avoided a trial on the three-count indictment against her for theft and perjury, it is likely she will receive a substantially lesser sentence than the maximum she could have faced. Prior to the plea deal being entered into the court record, the State Prosecutor was prepared to proceed with a trial in late August, and agents of that office had recently appeared in Cecil County to serve subpoenas on former members of the GOP committee to testify at a trial, sources told Cecil Times. On Monday, a “statement of facts” was […]
