Candidates for the three open Cecil County Council seats at stake in the November general election faced off 10/8/14 in an issues forum at the Cecil College campus in North East, with most candidates focusing on the economy and drug abuse issues as key concerns for the county’s future. But one candidate flubbed a county budget issue and another didn’t seem to understand the Internet and broadband issues, while most candidates pledged to be polite and collaborative in a new County Council– in contrast to the often open warfare that has prevailed in the Council for the past two years. During the forum moderated by former county schools superintendent Carl Roberts and sponsored by the county Chamber of Commerce, candidates for the Council seats were asked the same questions and given a limited time for responses. The forum format did not provide for back-and-forth debate among the candidates. A question about the county budget, and how the Council would interact with the County Executive in the budget process, drew a numerical slip from one candidate in District 4 when George Patchell, a Republican, miscalculated the public school system’s proportion of the county budget. Patchell, the executive director of the Cecil […]

There were budget questions and history lessons Wednesday evening as the rivals for Cecil County Sheriff and candidates for Register of Wills faced-off in a question-and-answer session at Cecil College, less than a month before the November general election. The candidates’ forum, sponsored by the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce, provided William (Danny) Blackburn, the Democratic nominee for Sheriff, and Scott Adams, the Republican nominee, with the same questions and a limited time for responses. But Blackburn stumbled on questions about the agency’s budget. Both candidates are seeking to fill the spot of current Sheriff Barry Janney, who is retiring. Incumbent Register of Wills Allyn (Lyn) Price Nickle, a Democrat, and challenger Michael W. “Good Mike” Dawson, a Republican, were questioned about their experience and the role of the Register’s office. Dawson interjected his Christian faith as one of his qualifications for office. Carl Roberts, the former county schools superintendent, acted as moderator and posed the questions. The session was not a debate format, and candidates were not given an opportunity to respond to or direct questions to each other. Asked about the Sheriff’s department’s operating budget and priorities for spending, Blackburn said, “That’s a difficult question for me; I […]

Candidates for three Cecil County Commissioner seats at stake in this year’s elections debated on jobs and county schools Thursday night, with two of the contests drawing the sharpest comments, and contrasts, between the contenders. Carl Roberts, the former superintendent of schools who is running as a Democrat for the 4th District seat, disputed the assertion by his opponent, Diana Broomell, a Republican, that the county schools budget accounts for more than 61 percent of the overall county budget. “It never was 61 percent—ever,” during his tenure as superintendent, he said. Roberts said the schools budget, now 47 percent of the county budget, declined as a proportion of the overall county budget on his watch, as the county needed to shift funds to roads and other needs. “You do not have accurate numbers,” he told his opponent, suggesting she hadn’t done her homework on the schools or other issues. The candidates appeared at a forum sponsored by the Cecil County Patriots, the local “tea party” group that has sponsored previous forums for commissioner candidates during the primary election season. The forum, attended by a smaller audience than past events, was hosted by an independent moderator, Michael Futty, from Toastmasters International. […]
