Cecil County Councilor Joyce Bowlsbey, who was appointed earlier this year by County Executive Moore to fill the balance of Moore’s term in District 2, announced Thursday night that she will be a candidate for election to the seat in the 2014 election. “I’ve decided that I owe it to this county to continue to bring this county forward,” Bowlsbey said in announcing her decision to run before a Chesapeake City gathering of about 150 people organized by the Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government. Bowlsbey had previously said she did not intend to run for the seat but in recent weeks re-evaluated her position, and was strongly encouraged to run by members of the local business community. “I didn’t then, and I don’t now, have political aspirations,” said Bowlsbey, a leader in various civic, charitable and business groups for many years before her appointment to the Council in January. But her concerns for continuing the efforts of the current Council majority to advance programs and policies to promote the county’s future prompted her decision to run as a candidate. Before her appointment to the Council, Bowlsbey had compiled a lengthy resume of business and civic involvement, including heading the […]

It was a night for crowing a bit about the unanimous success of the five local candidates endorsed for election last year by the Cecil Business Leaders organization but organizers of the group were not resting on their laurels Thursday evening as they urged Cecil County citizens to get involved in re-designing the local political landscape in 2014. The Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government began its life a year ago as a Political Action Committee (PAC) to support candidates reflecting its pro-business agenda in the 2012 primary and general election campaigns. The PAC raised a total of $40,655 during the primary and general election campaigns, according to four financial disclosure reports filed with the state Board of Elections. Most of the donations were from businesses and business men and women in the county and nearby areas. Mario Gangemi, vice president of the group, said that the PAC and its “partners” pumped nearly $70,000 in the 2012 campaigns, explaining later that the PAC worked with some businesspeople who didn’t want to donate directly to the PAC but were willing to donate to individual candidates’ campaign funds. The PAC did not donate directly to candidates but printed mailers and purchased advertising […]

A business political action committee, organized last year in dissatisfaction with the current leadership of Cecil County government, Tuesday endorsed Tari Moore in the Republican primary for county executive. The board of the group, Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government, voted unanimously to endorse Moore, a first-term County Commissioner from District 2, in her bid in the April 3 GOP primary. Six other candidates are competing with her in that primary. Mario Gangemi, vice-chairman of the PAC, told Cecil Times that the group “may” endorse a candidate in the Democratic primary as well but no decision has yet been made. He said the group has interviewed all three Democratic candidates in that party’s primary. David Williams, chairman of the PAC, said in a statement that the board members “feel confident that Tari possesses the knowledge and required skill to successfully implement charter government next December, 2012. Her past experiences including those acquired in her current position of County Commissioner have prepared her for this position.” Williams added that Board members “noted her work in Annapolis as the Cecil County representative to the Maryland Association of Counties as one of many factors that influenced their decision.” Gangemi said the group felt […]
