CROW on MOORE’S MENU at HOGAN CHOWDOWN? Governor-Elect Larry Hogan is hosting a breakfast meeting in Annapolis on Tuesday 12/9/14 at the swank Treaty of Paris restaurant with the five Republican County Executives in the state, including Cecil County Executive Tari Moore. But the seating arrangements at the intimate gathering could be a bit awkward. That’s because another attendee is Alan Kittleman, the newly elected GOP County Executive in Howard County. Moore endorsed his Democratic opponent, Courtney Watson, in the November election—much to the dismay and amazement of local and state fellow Republicans. [ SEE previous CECIL TIMES report here: https://ceciltimes.com/2014/10/cecil-county-exec-tari-moore-breaks-gop-ranks-to-support-democrat-in-howard-county-exec-race-republicans-conservative-uproar/ ] Negative response to Moore’s action was swift and strong especially among GOP conservatives, some of whom vowed to seek retaliation at the party’s state convention with a resolution to censure Moore for her defection. But that talk fizzled in the love-fest of the state GOP convention in Ellicott City this past weekend, where a banner proclaimed, “We’re Back,” and Republicans were so giddy with their newfound power in Hogan’s election as governor in November that there was no room for any finger-pointing at other Republicans. And even dissident “Campaign for Liberty” ultra-conservative factions were muted, with two of […]

Cecil County Executive Tari Moore, a Republican, wrote in a Facebook post Sunday that she is “shocked” and “appalled” at negative local reaction to her recent endorsement of a Democrat, Courtney Watson, who is running for Howard County executive against a well-known statewide Republican. Moore has not responded to repeated messages from Cecil Times requesting an interview about her actions, and on Monday a staff aide said Moore would not respond to questions and directed attention to her Facebook posting on the Republican Club of Cecil County page. (So we’ll post some of our questions below here…) [SEE previous Cecil Times report on the endorsement, and GOP fallout from it, here: https://ceciltimes.com/2014/10/cecil-county-exec-tari-moore-breaks-gop-ranks-to-support-democrat-in-howard-county-exec-race-republicans-conservative-uproar/ ] In her post, Moore said she was “shocked and appalled to read the comments regarding my endorsement of Courtney Watson, who is running for County Executive in Howard County. Shocked, because I doubt any of you have even met Courtney, let alone worked with her as I have. Appalled, because judgment was passed without knowing any facts.” Moore and Watson, who has served two terms on the Howard County Council, have worked together in a women’s leadership group of the Maryland Association of Counties (MACO).
Cecil County Executive Tari Moore—a Republican who came under fire in her party when she briefly left the GOP to break a deadlock on appointing her successor to the County Council two years ago– has endorsed a Democrat running for County Executive in Howard County against a well-known statewide Republican. The endorsement, highlighted during a candidates’ debate this week, was the topic of much hand-wringing among state Republican party officials last Friday during the state party’s annual Oktoberfest gathering. “People were asking, ‘What was Moore thinking?’,” according to a source who attended the event but spoke on condition of anonymity. Courtney Watson, a Democrat, is running against Republican State Sen. Allan Kittleman for Howard County Executive. The winner of the election will succeed Ken Ullman, who is running for Lt. Governor on the statewide Democratic ticket with gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown. The local race is seen as a high-profile contest with potential statewide political implications by both parties. On her campaign Facebook page, Watson recently posted that she was “Proud to have the endorsement of the only elected female county executive in the state, Tari Moore (who happens to be a Republican!)” The post included a photo of the two […]
