COMMENTARY Cecil County has been there, done that, with several years of political turmoil instigated by the old Smipkin political machine and its cloned “Three Amigos” rule of the old county Board of Commissioners. Now, with that machine broken down and tossed into the political landfill, two cogs in the machine are looking to clone it into a new “Zorman” machine to dominate the Elkton town council. Robert (Bob) Gorman and Chris Zeauskas are running in Tuesday’s town council elections, seeking to oust incumbents Earl Piner and Charles Givens. The Zormans are also aligned with a currently seated council member. D.J. Van Reenan, who has repeatedly attacked fellow council members and town mayor Robert Alt, often in personal terms. There’s plenty of political and substantive room to raise questions about town business or suggest different ways of doing things. But the problem with the Zormans is tactics, attacks and a past record of political shenanigans aimed solely at helping political pals and advancing their own agenda, slinging mud often at the expense of decent public servants’ reputations. For just about every valid question that could be raised—from town water rates, to crime, to town fiscal actions—the Zormans turn the issues […]

Carrie L. Taylor, the former treasurer of the Cecil County Republican Central Committee and a protégé of the old ‘Smipkin” GOP political machine, has been indicted by a grand jury on three counts of theft, embezzlement and perjury involving the elected party committee’s finances. If convicted, she could face up to 25 years in jail and a $10,000 fine. The case was brought by the Office of the State Prosecutor, which under Maryland law is empowered to investigate and prosecute violations of state elections laws as well as political corruption cases. The prosecutor’s office is located in Towson, and often uses grand juries in Baltimore County to present its cases, but election law matters are governed by the state Board of Elections in Annapolis, in Anne Arundel County. The indictments against Taylor, 35, who is listed as residing in the Patriot’s Glen community in Elkton, were returned 3/13/15 by an Anne Arundel County grand jury and disclosed Monday by State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt. “Maintaining the integrity of Maryland’s criminal and election laws has always been and shall remain of the utmost importance to this office. Committee treasurers must recognize that misuse of campaign funds will not be tolerated,” Davitt […]

The campaign for the Cecil County Council seat from District 2 has been a polite, so far, contest between the two actual candidates: incumbent Joyce Bowlsbey, a Republican, and challenger John Ulrich, a Democrat. But as both candidates boost their fundraising efforts, shots have been fired from the sidelines by others who lost their own unrelated campaigns in the June primaries. Bowlsbey held a fundraiser last weekend, billed as a ‘BBQ and Bull’ event, in a barn at the Scheeler family farm in Cecilton that featured a mechanical bull ride. Bowlsbey, wearing cowboy boots, successfully completed a brief stint on the motorized beast but other riders—such as County Councilor Alan McCarthy (R-1)— flew off into the airbags within seconds. Ulrich is holding a fundraiser on Friday evening 8/12/14 at the Dove Valley winery in Rising Sun, featuring BBQ, music, and a wine tasting. Bowlsbey won the GOP primary with 52.7 percent of the vote over Chris Zeauskas, a member of the county’s Republican Central Committee who did manage to hold on to his committee seat despite losing his Council bid. Zeauskas aligned with the “Campaign for Liberty” ultra-conservative group that ran multiple unsuccessful candidates for the central committee and other […]
