Republican candidates for the Cecil County Council faced off this week in a polite question-and-answer session sponsored by the county’s Chamber of Commerce, with three challengers aligned with the Campaign for Liberty ultra-conservative group taking more mainstream positions than their social media presence. The event, held at Cecil College on 5/14/2018, also included a panel of GOP candidates for the three House of Delegates seats in District 36, with two challengers trying to unseat incumbents. (Cecil Times will be filing an in-depth report on the District 36 state race in the future and will include candidates’ comments therein.) The program only focused on races where there were contested seats in the June 26 party primaries and Carl Roberts, the former county schools’ superintendent who moderated the event, said another panel would be held in the fall to focus on general election races with cross-party competition. The format of the questions, crafted by a panel of Chamber members and not disclosed in advance to the candidates, posed essentially the same questions to all County Council candidates, but grouped the inquiries by Council district, so the rivals for a particular seat answered the questions at the same time. The questions focused on […]

EX-SHERIFF JANNEY CONSIDERS SECURITY CHIEF JOB FOR PROPOSED POT FARM Former Cecil County Sheriff Barry Janney, who is currently the chief of the Community Corrections unit of the county’s Detention Center, has joined a group of Harford County residents and businessmen in a bid to obtain one of 15 state licenses for a medical marijuana growing facility. In a highly competitive process, a special state commission is expected to pick the successful winners from hundreds of applicants in the next month or so. Janney is involved with an operation, “True Health Chesapeake, LLC,” that was first identified as an applicant by The Washington Post, which filed freedom of information requests to obtain names of persons associated with applicants for pot farm licenses. However, The Post identified the proposed location of the True Health facility as in Cecil County, but Janney told Cecil Times that in fact the planned operation would be located in the agricultural area of northern Harford County near Jarrettsville. Cecil County Sheriff Scott Adams told Cecil Times he had discussed the matter with Janney and made it clear that if the facility were to be licensed by the state, Janney would be “out” of his Cecil County […]

Cecil County’s newly-purchased animal shelter welcomed its first four-legged residents on Friday, with well-wishers dropping off treats and toys even as renovation work continued, including reducing the number of dog kennels available to house strays and limiting the size of a formerly open room for cats to interact with visitors. Milo, a Shepherd mix with personality plus, poised his nose against the mesh of his kennel to nuzzle against a visitor’s hand and later enjoyed a walk outdoors with some potential adopters visiting the shelter. (PHOTO: Milo hangs out with new shelter director Abigail Bingham) The county purchased the animal shelter formerly owned and operated for many years by the Cecil County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Inc. (CCSPCA) on Route 213 in Chesapeake City, south of the C&D Canal bridge. For the past 3 ½ years, the county paid a private “rescue” group, A Buddy for Life, Inc., a total of over $2.5 million to operate animal control services at a rented kennel in Elkton. The county purchased the CCSPCA facility for $395,000 several month ago and obtained County Council approval to spend another $100,000 for renovations and equipment purchases for what will now be a […]
