A business political action committee, organized last year in dissatisfaction with the current leadership of Cecil County government, Tuesday endorsed Tari Moore in the Republican primary for county executive. The board of the group, Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government, voted unanimously to endorse Moore, a first-term County Commissioner from District 2, in her bid in the April 3 GOP primary. Six other candidates are competing with her in that primary. Mario Gangemi, vice-chairman of the PAC, told Cecil Times that the group “may” endorse a candidate in the Democratic primary as well but no decision has yet been made. He said the group has interviewed all three Democratic candidates in that party’s primary. David Williams, chairman of the PAC, said in a statement that the board members “feel confident that Tari possesses the knowledge and required skill to successfully implement charter government next December, 2012. Her past experiences including those acquired in her current position of County Commissioner have prepared her for this position.” Williams added that Board members “noted her work in Annapolis as the Cecil County representative to the Maryland Association of Counties as one of many factors that influenced their decision.” Gangemi said the group felt […]

A new pro-business political action committee Tuesday endorsed incumbent Republican Robert Hodge for the 5th District Cecil County Council seat and Dr. Alan McCarthy, a veterinarian challenging incumbent James Mullin in the 1st District Republican primary. But the PAC sidestepped a potentially divisive endorsement in the crucial but crowded field of candidates for Cecil County’s first-ever County Executive. The Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government PAC, which was announced last December with much fanfare and an overflow crowd of interested citizens, is dedicated to ending the current political infighting in Elkton and electing county officials who are committed to improving the local economy. The group also made a bipartisan endorsement Tuesday of two incumbent Circuit Court Judges: Keith Baynes, a Republican, and Jane Cairns Murray, a Democrat. Baynes and Murray have garnered endorsements from both local Republican and Democratic clubs recently. A third candidate, Del. Michael Smigiel (R-36), is challenging the sitting judges, who were appointed by the governor after they successfully completed a lengthy legal panel vetting process that Smigiel declined to go through. But the PAC was silent on the most important political contest on this year’s local election ballot: County Executive. Three Democrats have filed for their […]

There wasn’t a “Smipkin” in sight Wednesday night when a new business-oriented political action committee held its first official meeting in Elkton to organize a campaign against the current ruling majority of the Cecil County Commissioners. But there was a standing-room-only crowd of nearly 300 people, a bipartisan turnout of business owners, current and former elected officials, and citizens, all seeking a new political day in the county. Despite monsoon-like rain, the overflow crowd showed up at Mick’s Crab House (the former Bentley’s) on Route 40 in Elkton to hear organizers of the new group, Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government (CBLBG) PAC, outline their goals to educate voters, recruit candidates and raise funds in the 2012 election season. David K. Williams, chairman of the group, surveyed the crowd and declared the event “exciting” and just the start of a new community initiative to organize citizens and business leaders to engage in county issue activism. “We’re going to be very political,” he said, “but we’re not going to be partisan.” He said Democrats, Republicans and independents were all welcome to become involved. Indeed, the crowd was a broad mix of the local political spectrum. Republican Commissioners Robert Hodge (R-5) and […]
