HARRIS CLOBBERS SMIGIEL IN GOP $ Incumbent US Rep. Andy Harris (R-1) has raised some princely sums for his re-election campaign while his challenger in the Republican primary, former state delegate Michael Smigiel, is a relative pauper, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). As in past elections, Harris’ reports look like the office directory at a major medical center, with donations from political action committees (PACs) associated with medical specialty groups, from radiologists to orthopedists to surgeons. Harris is a physician who practiced anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. So a surgeon’s PAC donated $3,500 in two contributions, while orthopedists chipped in another $3,500 and the uniquely named “Brain PAC” thought Harris deserved its $1,000 donation. Overall, for the first six months of this year, Harris reported total contributions from individuals of $271,000, and $144,290 from PACs, for a total raised of $415,370 in new money. He already had a cash on hand balance from previous fundraising of $297,598. So even after campaign expenditures, such as printing expenses, fundraiser events, etc, amounting to $133,563, Harris ended up with a total of $579,620 cash on hand in his campaign warchest. The First District, which covers all of the […]

CECILTON— Democrats hoping to take on the uphill battle to reclaim the Congress seat now held by Rep. Andy Harris (R-1) brought their spirited primary campaign to Cecilton Wednesday night. Dr. John LaFerla, a Chestertown physician, and Wendy Rosen, a Baltimore County businesswoman, answered questions from members of Cecil County and Kent County Democratic clubs and a small audience of voters at the Cecilton firehouse, in southern Cecil County. A third candidate in the primary, Kim Letke, of Harford County, did not attend the forum. LaFerla emphasized his “lifelong Democrat” status, challenging Rosen’s change of heart to the Democratic Party after being a registered Republican until a few years ago. Rosen countered that the last Republican presidential candidate she had voted for was Ronald Reagan in his first term, “and I didn’t make that mistake again.” She said her past party affiliation would make her a better candidate to challenge Harris because she would appeal to Republicans and Independents, as well as Democrats, in a November general election campaign. The redistricting plan approved by the General Assembly several months ago turns the First District into a Republican bastion in terms of voter registration and any Democrat will face a difficult, […]

The new Cecil Business Leaders for Better Government Political Action Committee (PAC) announced Tuesday that the group endorses incumbent Cecil County Commissioner Robert Hodge (R-5) for re-election and Republican political newcomer Dr. Alan McCarthy for the 1st District seat now held by James Mullin (R). But the group held off on endorsing any candidate in the hotly contested race for Cecil County’s first County Executive in the 2012 election. PAC officials said the group was still reviewing candidates and would be “watching” how potential county executive candidates handle issues on the campaign trail before the April primary elections. While the group has interviewed some Democratic candidates for the county executive post, leaders acknowledged they did not consider Democrats for endorsement in their party’s primary for the contested County Council seats. The group felt that Hodge’s pro-business record spoke for itself and cited the PAC’s recruitment of McCarthy to run in the 1st District as reasons that the PAC did not offer endorsements in the Democratic primary. Hodge has a GOP primary opponent, political newcomer Keith Moore, while James Crouse, the former mayor of Elkton, is unopposed in the Democratic primary in District 5. In District 1, McCarthy, a Chesapeake City […]
