NEWS ANALYSIS The national shock and horror of last weekend’s mass shootings in El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH brought out the usual “thoughts and prayers” for the victims from a bipartisan roster of public officials, but that wasn’t good enough for State Sen. Steve Hershey (R-36), who represents Cecil County and three other Eastern Shore counties in Annapolis. Virtually alone among Maryland Republicans, Hershey has taken to Twitter for several days to call out racists and suggest that President Trump didn’t go far enough to address the root causes of the terrorism that targeted Hispanics in Texas. “I’m done with the thoughts and prayers. I’m done with the phony outrage from scores of politicians. I’m angry. I’m horrified. I’m devastated. Our American culture is suffering. Let’s call this what it is: A white nationalist committed an act of terrorism.” Hershey wrote on Sunday 8/4/2019. Later, after President Trump and others insisted that mental illness was the cause, Hershey observed, “How many more times are we going to use “mental illness” as the standard response to a mass shooting? That crutch has been worn thin. Here’s what happened in El Paso: a guy drove hundreds of miles and committed an […]

NEWS ANALYSIS From nose-biting at a polling place to creating a political club with virtually the same name as a longstanding and well-known Republican group so as to confuse voters, never let it be said that Cecil County politics is clean and above-board. Now we can add to the dirtpile the cyberspace hijacking of one candidate’s full name by his opponent, in order to divert voters to his own website and solicit donations. Ed Larsen, a janitorial services business owner from Conowingo, filed to run in the Republican primary for County Council in District 4 against incumbent George Patchell. Patchell, who is the popular head of the Cecil County YMCA and well known as a leader in youth activities, was first elected to the County Council four years ago and has filed for re-election in the June Republican Primary. (There is no Democratic candidate, so the winner of the GOP primary will be unopposed on the November general election ballot.) Larsen, apparently not content to make a straightforward appeal to voters with his own website, “Larsen4Cecil.com,” has registered at least four website domain names that are plays upon George Patchell’s name, according to records on file with the ICANN/ WHOIS […]

CRISFIELD—What a difference a year makes in the political landscape of the Upper Eastern Shore, but some things never change at one Shore political institution: the J. Millard Tawes annual crab and clambake here. The beer was still icy, the crabs and fried clams were warm and plentiful, and the still-surviving candidates after an unusually early primary election were working the crowds for votes in November. It was the 38th annual Maryland summer ritual of steamed seafood and raw political glad-handing on Wednesday, but there were some big changes from last year’s event: the absence of some Upper Shore politicians who no longer have a seat either in Annapolis or at the crab-picking tables under the white tents in Crisfield. Just a year ago, State Sen. E.J. Pipkin and his ally, Del. Michael Smigiel, both R-36, were working the Crisfield crowd with legions of tee-shirted campaign supporters, seeking to continue the political dominance of the four counties of the 36th district they had held since 2002. But just a few weeks after last year’s event, Pipkin shocked the local and state political world by announcing he was resigning from his seat to move to Texas and embark on a new […]
