Andy Harris, the incumbent Republican for Maryland’s First District US House seat, won a bitterly contested fight against Jesse Colvin, a Democrat and first-time political candidate, as the overwhelmingly Republican district held to its majority party roots amid signs of discontent and an erosion of Harris support in some key areas. The District, which covers all of the Eastern Shore, including Cecil County, and parts of three counties on the western side of the Chesapeake Bay, is the most heavily Republican in the state by voter registration but Colvin had pinned his hopes on independents and cross-over voters. But Harris carried the district with 60.5 percent of the vote, while Colvin received 37.6 percent. A Libertarian candidate, Jenica Martin, received 1.9 percent of the vote. In Cecil County, the county’s GOP majority held sway, with Harris winning 61 percent of the local vote to Colvin’s 36.7 percent. Martin received 2.3 percent. But another GOP majority county, Talbot, switched course in the election, giving a 50.7 percent majority to Colvin and 47.8 percent to Harris. Easton was a hotbed of pro-Colvin support and activism, as well as the site of the only live, public debate between the two candidates during the […]

Analysis Now that everyone has caught up on their sleep (maybe), pored over the election returns, and toasted with champagne (or cried in their beer), it’s time for a little post-primary election review and some look-aheads to the rest of the campaign season until November. After the Landslide The landslide victory of County Commissioner Tari Moore in the Republican primary for county executive is extraordinary in its depth and spread, despite the low voter turnout. (Local election officials calculate voter turnout overall in both primaries was 23.49 percent of registered voters, including both early voting and the Tuesday polling place voting.) In such a crowded field of seven candidates in the GOP primary, Moore racked up 46.2 percent of the vote, or 3,019 votes. She carried all [but one] of the county’s polling places, as well as the early vote. (Elections board officials are still counting absentee, provisional and overseas ballots– such as those filed by our military servicemen and women– before there is a final official tally.) One of the most astute local political players and observers– whose identity we are not at liberty to disclose– had calculated before the primary election that it would take about 2,300 votes […]

CECILTON— Democrats hoping to take on the uphill battle to reclaim the Congress seat now held by Rep. Andy Harris (R-1) brought their spirited primary campaign to Cecilton Wednesday night. Dr. John LaFerla, a Chestertown physician, and Wendy Rosen, a Baltimore County businesswoman, answered questions from members of Cecil County and Kent County Democratic clubs and a small audience of voters at the Cecilton firehouse, in southern Cecil County. A third candidate in the primary, Kim Letke, of Harford County, did not attend the forum. LaFerla emphasized his “lifelong Democrat” status, challenging Rosen’s change of heart to the Democratic Party after being a registered Republican until a few years ago. Rosen countered that the last Republican presidential candidate she had voted for was Ronald Reagan in his first term, “and I didn’t make that mistake again.” She said her past party affiliation would make her a better candidate to challenge Harris because she would appeal to Republicans and Independents, as well as Democrats, in a November general election campaign. The redistricting plan approved by the General Assembly several months ago turns the First District into a Republican bastion in terms of voter registration and any Democrat will face a difficult, […]
