The 287g agreement is an unnecessary addition to Cecil County. It needlessly frightens the growing immigrant community and discourages them from coming forward to assist in law enforcement efforts for the real violent criminals in our area. Let’s say someone in the immigrant community is robbed at gunpoint, but they are afraid to come forward. Now a violent criminal walks among us because the sheriff’s office has taken this step to break the trust of the immigrant community, thereby putting us all at greater risk.

Also, this program is done purely at the expense of the Cecil County tax payers. The Department of Homeland Security has a budget upwards of $18 billion dollars and can enforce their priorities on deportations just fine with their own money. Why should we, a small rural community with limited funds, subsidize one of the largest departments in the federal government?
